Census body: Egypt population reaching 92 million

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's government says in March, the number of Egyptian citizens will reach 92 million.

Of those, 84 million live in Egypt and 8 million abroad.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, the government's census authority, said the country's population has increased by one million since August 2012.

Egypt is the most populous country in the Middle East. A 2006 census put the population at 76.6 million, a 25 percent increase in a decade.

CAPMAS says Cairo, the capital, is home to 7.1 percent of the country's population, making it the largest and most densely populated city. The population of greater Cairo is estimated at 18 million.

The agency said the majority of Egypt's population resides along the Nile river valley, in just 7.7 percent of the country's territory.

Video: Storm churns toward New England

>>> more heavy weather is on the way. it's from that same storm that crippled parts of the midwest and it's now headed to new england. at the same time, a big new storm is churning out west. let's bring in meteorologist kim cunningham with the latest. it seems like a broken record.

>> it does. we've been so busy, it's like every weekend we're getting a storm here in the northeast. this is the one that did bring all that snow to the plains. we're going to see it bring some snow to boston , maybe a rain-snow mix starting out. new york, west of boston , into maine, 6 to 12 inches of snow before this is done, boston 3 inches mixing with rain through tomorrow. wind will be a problem as well. then the next storm to come out of the rockies, this one will bring snow into denver. that will be through tomorrow. then the same areas that got up to 2 feet of snow, and still 7 inches of snow on the ground in kansas city , will see an additional 6 to 12 inches . and chicago, you're also dealing with this. looks like tuesday we'll start to see the snow come in, 3 to 6 inches of snow. already 3 inches of snow still on the ground. lester, we're going to watch this storm take shape. same areas getting a lot of heavy snow. eventually, this will move to the east coast again. we'll be watching this one very closely.

America`s Deplorable State of the Union

by Stephen Lendman

Obama's annual State of the Union addresses reflect beginning-to-end doublespeak duplicity. Empty rhetoric signals business as usual.

Policy prioritizes corporate empowerment, rewarding rich elites, letting popular needs go begging, funding America's war machine, and cracking down hard on non-believers.

Obama does what his supporters thought impossible. He governs to the right of George Bush. He's beholden to powerful monied interests. They own him. He's their man in Washington. Whatever they want they get.

He mocks rule of law principles. He deplores democratic values. He prioritizes wrong over right. He's waging multiple direct and proxy wars on humanity.

He's waging social and economic ones domestically. He's creating unprecedented levels of poverty, unemployment, homelessness, hunger and deprivation.

Ahead of his address, White House blog contributor Macon Phillips called it "just the beginning." Citizen Response will be introduced.

It lets listeners and viewers explain how they're "connected to (issues) and then share (what's on their mind) with friends."

Q and A will follow. Theater will substitute for substance.

Handpicked hundreds will "join a special #WHSocial in person, and 100 White House followers on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ representing more than 20 states" nationwide.

They were "invited to watch the speech live from the White House and participate in a panel discussion."

On February 14, Obama will initiate "Fireside Hangouts." They'll imitate Franklin Roosevelt's fireside chats. He delivered dozens on radio from 1933 - 1944.

Obama's no FDR. The difference between them is stark. Obamanomics substitutes for New Deal fairness. What Roosevelt created, Obama helps put asunder. He heads a bipartisan criminal cabal.

He prioritizes the greatest wealth transfer in history. He's beholden to powerful monied interests. He's a jobs destroyer, not a creator.

He deplores people needs. He believes whatever government does, business does better so let it. Reform on his watch is a four-letter word. Social justice is verboten.

He enforces a repressive police state apparatus. Fundamental freedoms are eroding.

He's heading the nation toward insolvency, tyranny and ruin. Roosevelt promised change and delivered. Obama prioritizes it solely for rich elites, Wall Street backers, war profiteers, and other corporate favorites.

He pretends he cares. He's a con man. He calls for job creation while destroying them. Over 25 million working age Americans are unemployed. Tens of millions more are underemployed. Poor jobs substitute for decent ones.

Wages don't keep up with inflation. Benefits are disappearing. Increasingly most Americans are on their own. The worst is yet to come.

Progressive Radio News Hour regular Jack Rasmus says except for America's wealthiest 10%, median household spending lags badly.

What's occurring transacts via credit cards, installment and student loans. Incomes are inadequate. Savings are fast depleting.

"Consumer spending based on real income gains is just not happening for the middle class." Expect conditions to "seriously worsen," he warns.

Higher taxes, soaring food prices, and gasoline expected to exceed $5 a gallon by spring will hit hard.

Declining middle class income is hugely important. Inequality defines today's America. The wealthiest 1% gained enormously.

Today's fundamental cause of dire economic conditions is "long-term and continuing growth of income inequality," says Rasmus. Unprecedented wealth disparity figures reflect it.

Economist Joseph Stiglitz says America's top 1% gets around one-fourth of all annually generated income. In 1979, it was 8%. In 1928, it was 22%. It's more extreme now than ever.

It "continues to grow worse at an accelerating rate," says Rasmus. From 1993 - 2000, America's wealthiest 1% got 45% of all income growth.

From 2000 - 2008, it was 65%. In 2010, it was 93%. It comes from high pay, bonuses, capital gains, dividends, interest, rents, and other capital income forms.

At the same time, corporate profits soared. In 2011, they exceeded pre-recession 2007 levels. They've been rising at the fastest rate in 31 years.

Pre-tax, they doubled their 2008 recession low by March 2011. Achieving them involved more than increased sales. Job cuts, lower wages, fewer benefits, less working hours, other employee hardships, lower taxes, and faster depreciation rules produced them.

In 2011, profits as a percent of operating costs were their highest in over 80 years. They came at the expense of ordinary households. They sacrificed so corporate America and rich elites could gain.

Rasmus calls income inequality a "double edged sword." Over 80% of US households suffered so its wealthiest and corporate American could profit.

Middle class households are shrinking. Income inequality is longterm. High unemployment and lack of decent jobs exacerbate crisis conditions. What began decades ago is worse than ever now.

It reflects 21st century America. It's harsh, unforgiving and deplorable. Obama ignores solutions. Rhetoric substitutes for meaningful policy measures.

Helping those most in need is ignored. Austerity is prioritized when stimulus is needed. Problems fester and worsen.

On January 30, economist Richard Wolff addressed income inequality. Recent decades witnessed "a growing distance between higher and lower" levels, he said.

"Income inequality and poverty levels" grew. Western societies force-feed crushing hardships on ordinary people.

Key in capitalist societies "is how corporate boards of directors distribute (business) surplus(es) or net revenues (sales less direct production costs)."

Since the mid-1970s, real US wages for most workers stagnated or declined. At the same time, productivity rose. Corporations gained hugely. So did rich elites.

Today's inequality is greater than ever. Obama prioritizes keeping it that way. He personifies capitalism's failures. He deplores systemic change.

Expect nothing positive ahead on his watch. The worst is yet to come. Bet on it.

Israel: Report Shows Iran 'Closer Than Ever' to Nuclear Weapon

On Feb. 21, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the report "proves Iran is continuing to rapidly advance to the red line that the prime minster drew during his [September] speech in the United Nations."?

During that speech, Netanyahu called for a "clear red line" to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.?

At that time, he said Iran already had "70 percent of the necessary uranium enrichment for a bomb." Now, in light of the UN report, his office says "Iran is closer than ever to obtaining enriched material for a nuclear bomb."?

Israel believes Iran's pursuit of a nuclear must be stopped "at any cost," and will not rule out military action as an option.?

Three British Muslims convicted in 'bigger than 2005 London bombings' terror plot

Three British Muslims convicted in 'bigger than 2005 London bombings' terror plot

Three would-be suicide bombers who plotted to carry out an attack to rival the 7 July and 9/11 atrocities have been found guilty of terrorism charges.

Irfan Naseer, 31, Irfan Khalid, 27, and Ashik Ali, 27, from Birmingham, were found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court of being "central figures" in the plan.
Jurors were told they planned to set off up to eight bombs in rucksacks, using timers to detonate the charges.

Police described the men as "committed, passionate extremists".
The trio were arrested in 2011 amid fears an attack was imminent.

Detectives believe it is the most significant terror plot to be uncovered since the 2006 conspiracy to blow up transatlantic airliners using bombs disguised as soft drinks.
Khalid even boasted that the attack was "another 9/11" and "revenge for everything".

Charity workers'
The three men were found guilty of 12 counts of preparing for acts of terrorism between December 2010 and their arrest in September the following year.
The jury heard that Naseer and Khalid had received training from al-Qaeda contacts in Pakistan - and had recorded martyrdom videos there before returning to the UK.

Having recruited others, the group posed as legitimate charity workers on the streets of Birmingham and collected thousands of pounds from unsuspecting members of the public.

Naseer played a key role in sending four other Birmingham men to Pakistan to receive training. All of these have already pleaded guilty to preparing for acts of terrorism: Ishaaq Hussain, 21, Shahid Khan, 21, Naweed Ali, 25, and Khobaib Hussain, 22.

Two other Birmingham men who were part of Naseer and Khalid's plans, Rahin Ahmed, 27, and Mujahid Hussain, 21, have also pleaded guilty to terrorism charges.

The judge told the men they would all face life in prison when they were sentenced in April or May.

Mr Justice Henriques told Naseer he had been convicted on "overwhelming evidence" and that he faced "a very long minimum term".
He said: "You were seeking to recruit a team of somewhere between six and eight suicide bombers to carry out a spectacular bombing campaign, one which would create an anniversary along the lines of 7/7 or 9/11. It's clear that you were planning a terrorist outrage in Birmingham."

Surveillance recordings

BBC home affairs correspondent Dominic Casciani said the convictions represented a major success for counter-terrorism officers in the West Midlands who, along with MI5, ran one of the largest undercover operations in recent years to identity the plotters and stop them.

Asst Chief Constable Beale: "They were out to cause some serious harm"

Nine men in all have been convicted as a result of the investigation.

The jury heard that the security services had the men under such close surveillance that they recorded them laughing and joking about their plans and how they did not need to worry about their car's MOT, because they would be dead by the time it expired.

The men were arrested after recorded conversations revealed Naseer's depth of knowledge about bomb-making and the three discussed time frames for attacking targets.

They had discussed targets while under surveillance but had not settled on a final plan. During his police interview, Ali told detectives that they wanted to wear explosive vests and had considered attacking British soldiers.

The trial heard the men were inspired by sermons of US-born Islamist cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed in Yemen in September 2011.

'Maim and kill'

Karen Jones, specialist counter-terrorism prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "These men had dangerous aspirations and whilst the precise targets remained unclear, the potential for damage and loss of life from their plot should not be underestimated.

"The evidence we put to the court showed the defendants discussing with awe and admiration the attacks of 9/11 and 7/7. These terrorists wanted to do something bigger, speaking of how 7/7 had 'gone a bit wrong'."

The men carried out fraudulent charity collecting on the streets of Birmingham

Detective Inspector Adam Gough of West Midlands Police led the investigation into the men.

"There's no doubt whatsoever that they were the real deal," he said. "They are committed, passionate extremists. They had a real stated intention to kill and maim as many people as they possibly can. More than that, they not only had that intention, but they had the capacity and training to make that intention a reality.

"Naseer is a very devious and calculating man. He is someone who had a real hatred of western values, someone who wants to bring his influence to others and a compulsive liar. A very dangerous man."

Irfan Naseer told the trial that the hours of secret recordings of him talking about terrorism and bomb-making were all nonsense.

He said he had pretended to be a terrorist because he wanted to end rumours in his local community that he was a Pakistani spy. Ashik Ali denied wanting to be a terrorist. Irfan Khalid did not give evidence in his defence.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sony showed off what the PlayStation 4 can do, but not what it will look like.

The Japanese electronics giant talked about its upcoming game console for the first time and said it will go on sale this holiday season.

But Sony didn't reveal the device itself. Presenters played games that were projected on screens in a converted opera house, but the PlayStations themselves were hidden backstage throughout Wednesday evening's two-hour event.

"I don't know that the box is going to be something that's going to have a dramatic impact on people's feelings about the game. It will be a color and a size fairly comparable to previous consoles," said Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the U.S.-based arm of the PlayStation business.

"There's a big story to tell here, and it's going to take between now and the holiday season to get all the details out there," Tretton said in an interview.

Tretton said the price of the PS4 hasn't been decided yet, but hinted that it wouldn't be as high as the PlayStation 3 was initially. The PS3 debuted in 2006 with two models for $500 and $600. It now sells for about $300.

The PS4 will be jostling for attention this holiday season with Microsoft's successor to the Xbox. Details on that device are expected in June. Xbox 360 came out a year before PS3 and has been more popular, largely because of its robust online service, Xbox Live, which allows people to play games with others online. Having an event this early allows Sony to grab the spotlight for a few months, though the lack of an actual device was noted by many people on Twitter and elsewhere.

Sony did reveal that the insides of the PS4 will essentially be a "supercharged PC," much like an Xbox. That's a big departure from the old and idiosyncratic PlayStation design and should make it easier for developers to create games. Sony Corp. is using processing chips made by Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

"One of the big challenges we faced in the past was that we created great technology that we handed over to the development community, and they had to go through a learning curve before they could harness it. And when they did, we saw some phenomenal games," Tretton said. "We wanted to lower that barrier of entry and really give them the ability to create tremendous gaming experiences from Day One."

The adoption of PC chips also means that the new console won't be able to play games created for any of the three previous PlayStations, even though the PS4 will have a Blu-ray disc drive, just like the PS3. Instead, Sony said gamers will have to stream older games to the PS4 through the Internet.

Other new features revolve around social networking and remote access. With one button, you can broadcast video of your game play so friends can "look over your shoulder virtually," said David Perry, co-founder of the Sony-owned Internet game company Gaikai. With remote play, you can run a game on the PS4 to stream over the Internet to Sony's mobile gaming device, the PlayStation Vita, which debuted last year.

The goal is to make the PS4 so good at figuring out what games and other content you want that it can download it without being asked, so that it's available when you realize you do want it, Sony said.

"Our long-term vision is to reduce download times of digital titles to zero," said Mark Cerny, Sony's lead system architect on the PS4.

The PS4 is arriving amid declines in video game hardware, software and accessory sales. Research firm NPD Group said game sales fell 22 percent to $13.3 billion in 2012. With the launch of the PS4, Sony is looking to attract people who may have shifted their attention to games on Facebook, tablet computers and mobile phones.

Forrester analyst James McQuivey said Sony is missing the point by building what amounts to an upgraded PS3.

"Sony believes the future will be like the past and has built the game console to prove it," he said. "Tablets and smartphones now engage more people in more minutes of gaming than consoles will ever achieve."

Sony showed an updated controller that adds a touchpad and a "share" button. The controller also features a light bar, which means a new PlayStation camera can more easily track the device for motion control.

Dennis Fong, CEO of the gaming-centric social networking site Raptr, thinks Sony's focus on sharing with the PS4 will be good for both gamers and business.

"The ability to capture an image, video or instantly broadcast what's on players' screen to their friends is transformational for the new generation of consoles," said Fong. "Providing them with community tools to create videos and live broadcasts is a cool feature for gamers, and also great for business. User-generated content keeps players engaged with the game even while they aren't playing it and also attracts new users from the buzz generated around this content."

The bulk of Wednesday's event was devoted to demos of games for the PS4, including a realistic team racing simulator, "Drive Club," super-powered action sequel "Infamous: Second Son," artsy puzzler "The Witness" and several first-person shooter games, including "Killzone: Shadow Fall." Beyond games, the PS4 will let people create animation in 3-D using a Move motion controller ? all in real time.

Last fall, Nintendo launched the next generation of gaming consoles with the Wii U, which comes with a tablet-like controller called the GamePad. The controller allows two people playing the same game to have different experiences depending on whether they use the GamePad or a traditional Wii remote, which itself was revolutionary when it came out because of its motion-control features.

Judging by Wednesday's event, Sony seeks to improve but not revolutionize game play. The games were updates to existing ones, with improved graphics.

"At the end of the day, this is a device by gamers for gamers," Tretton said. "The games that people go out and spend billions of dollars on are your traditional shooters."

The original Wii has sold more units since its launch than both its rivals, but it has lost momentum in recent years as the novelty of its motion controller faded. Nintendo said it sold 3.1 million Wii Us by the end of 2012. It was a disappointing start for the first of a new generation of gaming systems.

In some ways, notably its ability to display high-definition games, the Wii U was just catching up to the PS3 and the Xbox 360, the preferred consoles to play popular games such as "Call of Duty."

All three console makers are trying to position their devices as entertainment hubs that can deliver movies, music and social networking as they try to stay relevant in the age of smartphones and tablets. The PlayStation online network will have access to Sony's video and music services, as well as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, with paid subscriptions to those services. People will also be able to access Facebook.

Bing updates Facebook photo search

Last year Microsoft?s search engine Bing rolled out its ?Friends Photos?, but today the company announced a huge update to the service, which allows users to search photos on Facebook. Before you press the panic button, the company assures us that ?Bing respects your Facebook privacy settings. Your Facebook friends will only be able to see the photos you have made viewable and your photos will never be shared with the public?

MK Li, Program Manager for Bing Social, also points out that ?more than 300 million photos [are] uploaded to Facebook per day?. That is a huge amount, but the social network also has a monstrous user base. He also stated ?that the Microsoft hopes this will make it??easier to scan, discover and explore your friends? photos?.

So what is included in this?brand?new update? Two things ? a new interface and a slideshow mode. Both will make your searches a bit simpler in the future.

bing facebook photo search

First, the new interface incorporates a more Metro, or Modern UI, design to the look of the search results. This brings it inline with Microsoft?s updates to the latest version of Windows ? Windows 8, as well as Windows Phone, Office 2013, Xbox and the vast majority of the company?s web sites.

Second, there is a slide show mode. This allows a user to click on an image and initiate a slide show that will display all of the results of that particular search. Li points out that ?from there, you can also search for additional photos, or simply browse?.

The updates have begun rolling out to all customers, but remember that these things frequently are gradual,?meaning?you may not get it right away. To check if you have access you can head over to?Friends? Photos?and give it a try. For me, it is working just fine, but results may vary by user and location.

South Sudan attack leaves more than 100 dead

JUBA (Reuters) - More than 100 people have been killed in South Sudan in an attack by rebels and ethnic allies on a convoy of families from a rival tribe and their cattle, an official said on Sunday.

Since breaking from Sudan in 2011, oil-producing South Sudan has struggled to assert control over remote territories awash with weapons after a 1983-2005 war with the north and torn by ethnic rivalries.

The attack on Friday was the worst violence in Jonglei State since 900 people were killed there in tribal attacks linked to cattle rustling in 2011, the United Nations said.

Rebels loyal to former theology student David Yau Yau and members of the Murle community had killed 103 people, most of them women and children, in the ambush on ethnic Lou Nuer families, state governor Kuol Manyang said.

"They came under attack from people in a huge force," he told Reuters. "There are many children and women missing. Their fate is not yet known."

Fourteen soldiers escorting the convoy were also killed, he said.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said it had sent a medical team to treat the wounded.

Yau Yau rebelled in July last year. He recruited armed youths antagonised by a government campaign to end tribal violence in Jonglei, which human rights groups say was marked by abuses by soldiers.

More than 1,500 people have been killed in Jonglei since independence, according to the United Nations.

South Sudan accuses Sudan of dropping weapons and ammunition to Yau Yau's rebels, an allegation denied by Khartoum.

The violence in Jonglei is hindering government plans to explore a major oil concession with the help of France's Total.

New strategy for interfering with potent cancer-causing gene

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive blood cancer that is currently incurable in 70% of patients. In a bold effort, CSHL scientists are among those identifying and characterizing the molecular mechanisms responsible for this cancer in order to generate potential new therapeutics.

CSHL Assistant Professor Christopher Vakoc, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues, including the group of Professor Robert Roeder Ph.D. at The Rockefeller University, report the characterization of a protein required for AML in a paper published February 11 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Screening of DNA packaging proteins calls attention to RNF20

About 5%-10% of AML is characterized by the rearrangement of a gene called MLL (Mixed-Lineage Leukemia). The MLL fusion proteins that result from this rearrangement are potent oncogenes -- cancer-causing genes. They are particularly common in infant acute leukemia, which is usually resistant to standard chemotherapy.

An emerging body of evidence implicates problems with chromatin, the packaging material for DNA within the cell nucleus, as a major cause of acute leukemia. Based on this, Vakoc's laboratory is searching for novel drug targets among chromatin proteins, with the hope of identifying new ways to fight this disease.

"We sifted through a class of proteins that add 'protein tags' to chromatin in a search for new therapeutic targets," says Eric Wang, a former technician in the Vakoc lab who led this study. Wang is currently a doctoral student at Johns Hopkins University. These 'protein tags' are called ubiquitin and constitute one of many ways to control which genes are switched 'ON' or 'OFF' in our cells.

The team identified a protein called RNF20 that attaches ubiquitin tags to chromatin as being essential for the formation of leukemias caused by MLL-rearrangements. When they suppressed the expression of RNF20, the researchers were able to decrease leukemia cell proliferation in living mice, extending their lifespan.

Upon closer examination, the team realized that by targeting RNF20 they prevent MLL-fusion proteins from being able to work. "When we reduce the levels of RNF20 in leukemia cells, they revert back to being more like normal blood cells," says Shinpei Kawaoka, a postdoc in the Vakoc lab who also was involved in the study.

Vakoc's team proposes a model in which leukemia cells of the MLL-rearranged subtype come to rely on RNF20 to maintain their gene expression program, implicating it as a potential therapeutic target. Small-molecule drugs that target other proteins involved in regulating ubiquitin tags already exist so it is possible that drugs targeting RNF20 could be developed in the future for the treatment of MLL-rearranged leukemia.

Miami Football: 4 Freshmen the Hurricanes Can Build Around

The final player on this list might see the field more than any other player mentioned.

Artie Burns may immediately earn playing time as a cornerback, but few would be shocked to see him take over Duke Johnson's role as kick returner.

In an ESPN article, Burns is said to be considered one of the nation's top hurdlers and may have a chance to compete in the upcoming Olympic Games.

If that doesn't say "speed," I'm not sure what does.

Golden could also utilize Burns as a safety in the future alongside now-sophomore Deon Bush to form a lethal tandem for Miami's defense.

Burns' pure speed and ball-hawking instincts are a perfect combination in a leader for years to come.

Mali beats Ghana 3-1 to finish 3rd in African Cup

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:37 p.m. ET Feb. 9, 2013

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (AP) -Mali defeated Ghana 3-1 to finish third in the African Cup of Nations on Saturday, overcoming the Black Stars for the second consecutive year in the consolation match.

Striker Mahamadou Samassa opened the scoring with a header in the 21st minute, captain Seydou Keita added to the lead with a close-range shot in the 48th, and Sigamary Diarra sealed the victory in stoppage time, ending Mali's emotional campaign.

Kwadwo Asamoah scored for Ghana in the 82nd. Ghana midfielder Wakaso Mubarak missed a penalty kick early in the second half, his first miss in four spot-kicks at this African Cup.

Last year, Mali beat Ghana 2-0 in the consolation match. It entered this year's tournament with players saying they were motivated to bring joy to fans enduring political instability and fighting back home.

"I'm proud and very happy. The players worked hard for this bronze medal," Mali coach Patrice Carteron said. "For a nation like Mali, this is a fantastic result."

Saturday's loss at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium added even more disappointment to Ghana, which reached the semifinals the last four times but was leaving without the title again.

Ghana was relegated to the third-place match after losing the semifinal to Burkina Faso in a penalty shootout. The Black Stars won the last of their four titles in 1982.

"The players did so well getting to the semifinals," Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah said. "It's disappointing but the group is young and given the same opportunity in the future they will do well because they will be more experienced."

Mali was trying to make it to the final for the first time in more than 40 years, but its hopes of a first title ended after a 4-1 defeat to Nigeria in the semis. Its best campaign remains a runner-up finish in 1972.

The Malians dedicated this latest uplifting campaign to their conflict-torn home country, where French troops are fighting Islamist extremists.

Samassa scored with a diving header from near the penalty spot after a breakaway on the left side, and former Barcelona player Keita netted his third goal of the tournament with an easy shot from close range after a cross from the right.

Keita scored again in the 72nd but the goal was called off because of offside.

Ghana pulled one closer near the end with a long-range left-footed shot that curled to fool Mali goalkeeper Soumaila Diakite, who was his team's hero in the penalty shootout against host South Africa in the quarterfinals.

Diarra closed the scoring in the third minute of stoppage time, firing a left-footed shot into the far corner after beating Ghana defenders to a long ball inside the area.

Ghana had a chance to get on the board early in the second half after the referee called a handball inside the Mali box, but Mubarak sent his shot from the spot way over the crossbar. The Espanyol midfielder entered the match as one of the tournament's leading scorers with four goals along with Nigeria's Emmanuel Emenike, who will play in Sunday's final if he recovers from an injury.

Tight budget may force Pentagon to cut forces: general

RAMSTEIN AIR FORCE BASE, Germany (Reuters) - The Pentagon will have to cut the size of U.S. military forces for the second time in as many years if across-the-board spending reductions of $470 billion over 10 years take effect March 1, the top U.S. military officer said on Saturday.

General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said about a third of the cuts would have to come from forces, with the remaining two-thirds taken from spending on modernization, compensation and readiness.

He noted that the Army had begun to shrink last year toward 490,000 from a high of 570,000, a result of efforts to trim $487 billion over 10 years as required by the Budget Control Act of 2011.

The Budget Control Act also envisioned the additional across-the-board cuts under a process known as sequestration. If those cuts go into effect, "the Army will have to come down again," Dempsey said.

Speaking to reporters traveling with him to Afghanistan, Dempsey said two recent high-profile examples of belt-tightening were attempts by the Pentagon to adapt to the current challenging budget climate and had nothing to do with sequestration.

The Pentagon said last week it would seek a smaller-than-expected pay increase of 1 percent for military personnel in the 2014 fiscal year budget. Pay increases have generally been pegged to an employment cost index and had been expected to rise 1.7 percent.

"That action is being taken to help us absorb the $487 billion in the Budget Control Act. It has nothing to do with sequestration," Dempsey said.

A defense official said the lower pay increase would save the department about $470 million during the 2014 fiscal year. The savings would amount to $3 billion over five years because future increases would be based on the lower 2014 raise.

Dempsey said the decision this week to delay deployment of the USS Harry Truman aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East was to adjust to funding for the 2013 fiscal year.

Congress has not appropriated funds for the Pentagon for 2013. Instead, it passed a continuing resolution that temporarily extends Pentagon funding until late March at 2012 levels.

"The continuing resolution under which we're operating has more money in the investment account and less money in operations and maintenance and we don't have transfer authority to move it," Dempsey said. "So our operations and maintenance is deteriorating because of the misalignment of funding in the continuing resolution."

Dempsey is due to testify on the impact of sequestration at a hearing next week before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"What we've got to make clear to the Congress next week (is) that it's not just about sequestration. We're trying to absorb the $487 billion Budget Control Act, we're trying to absorb the challenges that were imposed on us by the continuing resolution and we're anticipating absorbing sequestration," Dempsey said.

Cupid's arrow: Light shed on laws of attraction

Feb. 8, 2013 ? We've heard the clich?s: "It was love at first sight," "It's inner beauty that truly matters," and "Opposites attract." But what's really at work in selecting a romantic or sexual partner?

University of Notre Dame Sociologist Elizabeth McClintock studies the impacts of physical attractiveness and age on mate selection and the effects of gender and income on relationships. Her research offers new insights into why and when Cupid's arrow strikes.

In one of her studies, "Handsome Wants as Handsome Does," published in Biodemography and Social Biology, McClintock examines the effects of physical attractiveness on young adults' sexual and romantic outcomes (number of partners, relationship status, timing of sexual intercourse), revealing the gender differences in preferences.

"Couple formation is often conceptualized as a competitive, two-sided matching process in which individuals implicitly trade their assets for those of a mate, trying to ?nd the most desirable partner and most rewarding relationship that they can get given their own assets," McClintock says. "This market metaphor has primarily been applied to marriage markets and focused on the exchange of income or status for other desired resources such as physical attractiveness, but it is easily extended to explain partner selection in the young adult premarital dating market as well."

McClintock's study shows that just as good looks may be exchanged for status and ?nancial resources, attractiveness may also be traded for control over the degree of commitment and progression of sexual activity.

Among her findings:

  • Very physically attractive women are more likely to form exclusive relationships than to form purely sexual relationships; they are also less likely to have sexual intercourse within the ?rst week of meeting a partner. Presumably, this difference arises because more physically attractive women use their greater power in the partner market to control outcomes within their relationships.
  • For women, the number of sexual partners decreases with increasing physical attractiveness, whereas for men, the number of sexual partners increases with increasing physical attractiveness.
  • For women, the number of reported sexual partners is tied to weight: Thinner women report fewer partners. Thinness is a dimension of attractiveness for women, so is consistent with the ?nding that more attractive women report fewer sexual partners.

Another of McClintock's recent studies (not yet published), titled "Desirability, Matching, and the Illusion of Exchange in Partner Selection," tests and rejects the "trophy wife" stereotype that women trade beauty for men's status.

"Obviously, this happens sometimes," she says, pointing to Donald Trump and Melania Knauss-Trump as an example.

"But prior research has suggested that it often occurs in everyday partner selection among 'normal' people ? noting that the woman's beauty and the man's status (education, income) are positively correlated, that is, they tend to increase and decrease together."

According to McClintock, prior research in this area has ignored two important factors:

"First, people with higher status are, on average, rated more physically attractive -- perhaps because they are less likely to be overweight and more likely to afford braces and nice clothes and trips to the dermatologist, etc.," she says.

"Secondly, the strongest force by far in partner selection is similarity -- in education, race, religion and physical attractiveness."

After taking these two factors into account, McClintock's research shows that there is not, in fact, a general tendency for women to trade beauty for money.

"Indeed, I find little evidence of exchange, but I find very strong evidence of matching," she says. "With some exceptions, the vast majority of couples select partners who are similar to themselves in both status and in attractiveness."

Best chance to see elusive Mercury is now

Starry Night Software

Mercury will be in a close conjunction with Mars on Friday night, low in the southwestern sky just after sunset.

By Geoff Gaherty
Space.com

Despite being among the brightest objects in the sky, Mercury is a planet very rarely seen by even experienced stargazers. The next couple of weeks offer the best opportunity in 2013 for observers in the Northern Hemisphere to spot Mercury's tiny speck of light in the evening twilight sky.

The trick for spotting Mercury is first to find an observing location with a low unobstructed western horizon, wait for half an hour after sunset for the sky to darken, and then sweep to the left of the sunset with binoculars. Once you've initially located the planet with binoculars, you can usually see Mercury with the unaided eye. Don't wait too late, or Mercury will have set. In a telescope, Mercury appears as a tiny "half moon."

Probably the earliest you can spot Mercury will be on Friday night (Feb. 8). This is a special night because Mars will appear very close to Mercury in the sky, giving observers a view of two planets at once.

Appearances are deceptive, though, because Mercury will be on the near side of the sun while Mars is on the far side, putting them 1.162 times the distance of the Earth from the sun (108 million miles, or 174 million kilometers) apart. Because of its greater distance from both Earth and the sun, Mars will appear 2.2 magnitudes fainter than Mercury on astronomers' brightness scale. [How to see more planets in Feb. night sky (Video)]

NASA / JPL

This NASA graphic shows the location of the crescent moon, Mars and the planet Mercury in the western sky just after sunset on Feb. 11.

A second opportunity to catch Mercury and Mars will occur three evenings later on Monday. Though not as close together, the near proximity of a slender crescent moon will make finding the pair easier. Look with binoculars for the "dark side" of the moon illuminated only by Earthshine: sunlight reflected from Earth.

A third opportunity to see Mercury occurs on Feb.15, when Mercury is at greatest elongation from the sun. This places Mercury at its highest altitude this month for observers in the Northern Hemisphere. Mars will probably have sunk too far toward the sun to be visible.

NASA / JPL

The locations of planets Mercury and. Mars at sunset on Feb. 16, are shown in this NASA sky map.

Why are some apparitions of Mercury better than others? It has to do with the angle between the observer's horizon and the ecliptic, the path that the sun and planets follow across the sky.

In the Northern Hemisphere, from February through April, the ecliptic at sunset is steeply angled to the horizon, placing Mercury relatively high. From August through October, the ecliptic lies almost parallel with the horizon at sunset, placing Mercury close to the horizon.

Take advantage of these opportunities to spot Mercury this month, and you?ll be able to say that you've seen something few astronomers have.

Editor's note:If you snap an amazing photo of Mercury in the night sky, or any other celestial object, and you'd like to share for a possible story or image gallery, please send images and comments, including location information, to Managing Editor Tariq Malik at?spacephotos@space.com.

Massive manhunt continues for ex-cop

The truck owned and driven by suspected cop killer Christopher Dorner during his alleged rampage through the Los Angeles area was found deserted and in flames on the side of Bear Mountain, Calif., this afternoon.

Heavily armed SWAT team members descended onto Bear Mountain from a helicopter manned with snipers today to investigate the fire. The San Bernadino Sheriff's Department confirmed the car was Dorner's.

Dorner, a former Los Angeles police officer and Navy reservist, is believed to have killed one police officer and injured two others early this morning in Riverside, Calif. He is also accused of killing two civilians on Sunday after releasing a scathing "manifesto" alleging grievances committed by the police department while he worked for it and warning of coming violence toward cops.

Read More About Chris Dorner's Allegations Against the LAPD

Heavily armed officers spent much of Thursday searching for signs of Dorner, investigating multiple false leads into his whereabouts and broadcasting his license plate and vehicle description across the California Highway System.

Around 3:45 p.m. ET, police responded to Bear Mountain, where two fires were reported, and set up a staging area in the parking lot of a ski resort. They did not immediately investigate the fires, but sent a small team of heavily armed officers up in the helicopter to descend down the mountain toward the fire.

The officers, carrying machine guns and searching the mountain for any sign of Dorner, eventually made it to the vehicle and identified it as belonging to Dorner. They have not yet found Dorner.

Late this afternoon, CNN announced that Dorner had sent a package containing his manifesto and a DVD to its offices.

PHOTOS: Former LAPD Officer Suspected in Shootings

Police officers across Southern California were on the defensive today, scaling back their public exposure, no longer responding to "barking-dog calls" and donning tactical gear outdoors.

Police departments have stationed officers in tactical gear outside police departments, stopped answering low-level calls and pulled motorcycle patrols off the road in order to protect officers who might be targets of Dorner's alleged rampage.

"We've made certain modifications of our deployments, our deviations today, and I want to leave it at that, and also to our responses," said Chief Sergio Diaz of the police department in Riverside, Calif., where the officers were shot. "We are concentrating on calls for service that are of a high priority, threats to public safety, we're not going to go on barking dog calls today."

Sgt. Rudy Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department said Dorner is "believed to be armed and extremely dangerous."

Early Thursday morning, before they believe he shot at any police officers, Dorner allegedly went to a yacht club near San Diego, where police say he attempted to steal a boat and flee to Mexico.

He aborted the attempted theft when the boat's propeller became entangled in a rope, law enforcement officials said. It was then that he is believed to have headed to Riverside, where he allegedly shot two police officers.

"He pointed a handgun at the victim [at the yacht club] and demanded the boat," said Lt. David Rohowits of the San Diego Police Department.

Police say the rifle marksman shot at four officers in two incidents overnight, hitting three of them: one in Corona, Calif., and the two in Riverside, Calif.

Lopez said two LAPD officers were in Corona on special detail to check on one of the individuals named in Dorner's manifesto and encountered Dorner. Dorner allegedly grazed one of them but missed the other.

"[This is an] extremely tense situation," Lopez said. "We call this a manhunt. We approach it cautiously because of the propensity of what has already happened."

After Dorner allegedly shot at LAPD officers in Corona, he fled and encountered two Riverside police officers stopped at a red light in their police car. Dorner used a rifle to shoot through their windshield, killing one officer and injuring the other, police said.

The deceased officer was a 34-year-old, 11-year veteran of the police department. The injured officer, age 27, was expected to make a full recovery.

Diaz said that the names of the officers were being withheld to protect their families, who might be targeted by Dorner if the names were released.

"They were on routine patrol stopped at a stop light when they were ambushed," Lt. Guy Toussant of the Riverside Police Department said.

In the manifesto Dorner published online, he threatened at least 12 people by name, along with their families.

"Your lack of ethics and conspiring to wrong a just individual are over. Suppressing the truth will leave to deadly consequences for you and your family," Dorner wrote in his manifesto.

A badge and identification belonging to Dorner have been found in San Diego, according to San Diego Police Sgt. Ray Battrick. Dorner's LAPD badge and ID were found by someone near the city's airport and turned in to police overnight, The Associated Press reported.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck said today that 40 protective details have been deployed to protect officers and their families.

"We are taking all measures possible to ensure safety of our officers and their families," he said.

Dorner is also believed to be responsible for the weekend slayings of an assistant women's college basketball coach, Monica Quan, and her fiance, Keith Lawrence, in what cops believe were acts of revenge against the LAPD, as suggested in his online manifesto.

Lawrence was found slumped behind the wheel of his white Kia in the parking lot of their upscale apartment complex in Irvine, Calif., Sunday and Quan was in the passenger seat.

"A particular interest at this point in the investigation is a multi-page manifesto in which the suspect has implicated himself in the slayings," Maggard said.

Police said Dorner's manifesto included threats against members of the LAPD, and so the department is taking extra measures to ensure the safety of officers and their families.

The document, allegedly posted on an Internet message board this week, apparently blames Quan's father, retired LAPD Capt. Randy Quan, for his firing from the department.

One passage from the manifesto read, "I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty."

"I never had the opportunity to have a family of my own," it read. "I'm terminating yours."

Dorner was with the department from 2005 until 2008, when he was fired for making false statements.

Randy Quan, who became a lawyer in retirement, represented Dorner in front of the Board of Rights, a tribunal that ruled against Dorner at the time of his dismissal, LAPD Capt. William Hayes told The Associated Press Wednesday night.

According to documents from a court of appeals hearing in October 2011, Dorner was fired from the LAPD after he made a complaint against his field-training officer, saying in the course of an arrest she had kicked a suspect who was a schizophrenic with severe dementia.

After an investigation, Dorner was fired for making false statements.

"We have strong cause to believe Dorner is armed and dangerous," Maggard said.

Donner was also a Navy reservist who'd just finished his military career as a lieutenant on Friday. His only overseas deployment was to a Navy base in Bahrain. He also received a Rifle Marksman Ribbon and Pistol Expert Medal, meaning he received superior scores when he tested at the range.

Police described Dorner as black, 6-feet tall and weighing 270 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Meanwhile, Cal State-Fullerton was mourning the loss of its beloved assistant coach.

"There are really no words to convey the sadness that our program feels, that the young women who have had the privilege of working with such a bright and passionate woman," head coach Marcia Foster said earlier this week. "I want to especially send out condolences to Randal and Sylvia Quan, and her brother Ryan."

After college, Quan coached at Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks and has spent the past two years as an assistant coach at Cal State-Fullerton. The university has posted a memorial page on its sports website dedicated to Quan.

Lawrence was a business graduate who recently started working as a public-safety officer at USC.

Over 90 percent of Americans support gun background checks: poll

(Reuters) - More than 90 percent of U.S. voters supported background checks for all gun buyers, while much smaller majorities were for stricter gun control laws such as bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, said a poll released on Thursday.

But the National Rifle Association (NRA) edged out President Barack Obama in the poll, with 46 percent saying the pro-gun lobby better reflects their views on guns, versus 43 percent for Obama.

By a margin of 92 percent to 7 percent, voters supported background checks, the Quinnipiac University telephone poll showed. In households with a gun, 91 percent were in favor, while 8 percent were opposed, Quinnipiac said.

In response to the December 14 shooting that killed 20 school children and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut, Obama last month announced a series of gun-control measures opposed by the NRA, including proposals for enhanced background checks and a ban on military-style assault weapons.

House Democrats were expected to announce their own firearms legislation on Thursday.

A majority of those surveyed supported stricter national gun control laws, Quinnipiac said. Fifty-six percent were for a ban on the sale of assault weapons, and the same percentage supported a ban on the sale of high-capacity magazines, defined as those holding more than 10 rounds.

Congress would need to approve those initiatives and background checks.

"The politics of gun policy are also unclear," Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement. "Despite the huge news media coverage of the issue since the Newtown shooting, only 37 percent of voters are more likely to vote for a congressman who votes to ban sales of assault rifles, while 31 percent are less likely, and 30 percent say it would not affect their vote."

The poll surveyed 1,772 registered voters from January 30 to February 4 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points, Quinnipiac said.

(AP) ? Sprint Nextel Corp., the country's third largest wireless carrier, on Thursday said it lost $1.3 billion in its fourth quarter, about the same as a year ago, as it revamped its network for a comeback versus bigger competitors.

The company's focus, and that of its investors, is on its long-term turnaround efforts rather than on short-term results. Sprint is selling 70 percent of itself to Japanese carrier Softbank Corp. for $20 billion. That deal is expected to close this summer, and provide long-ailing Sprint with a much-needed infusion of capital.

With Softbank's backing, Sprint has struck a deal to buy out the other shareholders of Clearwire Corp., which operates a wireless data network. That should give Sprint more space on the airwaves and allow it to offer high broadband speeds.

The Overland Park, Kan., company lost 44 cents per share in the October to December period versus 43 cents per share in the previous year.

The loss was slightly smaller than analysts had predicted. The average Wall Street forecast as polled by FactSet was 46 cents per share.

Revenue was $9 billion, up 3.2 percent from $8.7 billion a year ago as customers converted from regular phones to higher-paying smartphones. It was slightly above analyst expectations at $8.9 billion.

Sprint activated 2.2 million iPhones in the quarter, a record for the company, reached with the help of the new iPhone 5. The figure is far below those posted by bigger competitors AT&T and Verizon Wireless, but helps Sprint keep subscribers. It still lost a net 243,000 customers on contract-based plans in the quarter, as subscribers kept streaming off the Nextel network, which Sprint is shutting down.

Network chief Steve Elfman said the upgrade of the company's cell towers is on schedule despite the ravages of Superstorm Sandy. The company has lit up "LTE" antennas, which provide higher data speeds, in 58 cities and plans to light up another 170 in coming months. Verizon Wireless and AT&T got started on LTE earlier and have bigger networks up and running.

Sprint shares slipped 7 cents to $5.70 in afternoon trading. The previously volatile shares have been trading in a relatively narrow band between $5.40 and $6 since the Softbank deal was announced in October. The price reflects what Softbank is set to pay.

10 Valentine's Day Gifts for Under $15

Valentine?s Day is a major shopping event for consumers and it?s one of the biggest holidays on the retail calendar.

According to the National Retail Federation, Americans planned on spending over $10 billion dollars on their significant others in 2012. And that figure doesn?t include children, family members or pets!

I know what you are all thinking: People buy Valentine?s Day gifts for their pets? I know, it?s news to me too.

Whether you are planning on buying a Valentine?s Day gift for your spouse, loved one, grandmother, parent, or furry friend, this is a day to express your love and gratitude for the people (or animals) in your life and the size of your spending isn?t a reflection of the size of your heart.

Here are 10 Valentine?s Day gifts that are sure to warm the hearts of your loved ones (pets not included ? sorry!) without burning a hole in your budget.

Foldable.Me, a KickStarter sensation, lets you create little cardboard 3-D cutouts of yourself.

Create a version of you and your Valentine for a very cute and very custom gift.

Make a big expression of love with this tiny heart necklace that has an equally small price tag.

The tiny heart gold necklace is 16 inchels long and includes gold plating over the brass finding and chain.

The Milktape USB Cassette Mixtape looks just like the mix tapes you used to make in high school, but it plugs into a USB port.

Handpick each song from the heart and simply click and drag to create a custom mixtape for your special someone.

Bonus points if you include songs you actually listened to in high school.

An Awesome Book of Love!, Dallas Clayton?s heartwarming follow-up to his self-published An Awesome Book, explores the many faces of love.

This book is a perfect gift for valentines of all ages?or really for any day you?d like to tell someone special how much you care.

For the non-traditional valentine, this humorous card pokes a little fun at what being in a relationship can really feel like sometimes.

Each card is handmade with love in Atlanta, GA and printed one-by-one on a 100-year old, 2000lb, cast iron letterpress.

Check out the other designs in this collection including:

?I love you? like monsters love closets?
?I love you? like kittens love robots?
?I love you? like dogs love squirrels?
?I love you? like toddlers love empty boxes?
?I love you? most of the time?
?I like you? a lot?

Who says forever is better??Show love for your valentine by giving them a temporary tattoo friendship bracelet, designed by the ever-talented Julia Rothman.

Each set comes with two friendship bracelet tattoos ? one for you and one for your special someone.

Beer Soap ? $6.75 and up?

Now your love can soak up their favorite beer without all the stinky side effects.

Good for hair body and shaving, these beer soaps come in a variety of brews including Pabst Blue Ribbon and various ales, pilsners, stouts, and more.

They say diamonds are a girl?s best friend but I?ll bet coffee is right up there, too. This 2 Carat Cup sports a ring-shaped handle set with a fab faux diamond (a genuine Swarovski crystal) that slips effortlessly onto the finger as she sips.

The coffee mug comes packaged in an oversized flip-up ring box, so when you open the box all you see is the ring, the cup is concealed inside the box.

Warning: This is probably not the best gift for someone who is anxiously awaiting a real engagement ring. Consider yourself warned.

These hologram heart glasses will have you feeling like you?ve fallen in love all over again. Just put the glasses on, look at lights or candles on a table, and you will see a holographic image of hearts.

Helpful tip: These would make a very romantic (and inexpensive) addition to any of these almost free Valentine?s Day date ideas.
