New slow-motion DoS attack: just a few PCs, little fear of detection

Qualsys Security Labs researcher Sergey Shekyan has created a proof-of-concept tool that could be used to essentially shut down websites from a single computer with little fear of detection. The attack exploits the nature of the Internet's Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), forcing the target server to keep a network connection open by performing a "slow read" of the server's responses.

The Slow Read attack, which is now part of Shekyan's open-source slowhttptest tool, takes a different approach than previous "slow" attacks such as the infamous Slowloris?a tool most notably used in 2009 to attack Iranian government websites during the protests that followed the Iranian presidential election. Slowloris clogs up Web servers' network ports by making partial HTTP requests, continuing to send pieces of a page request at intervals to prevent the connection from being dropped by the Web server.

Slow Read, on the other hand, sends a full request to the server, but then holds up the server's response by reading it very slowly from the buffer. Using a known vulnerability in the TCP protocol, the attacker could use TCP's window size field, which controls the flow of data, to slow the transmission to a crawl. The server will keep polling the connection to see if the client?the attacker?is ready for more data, clogging up memory with unsent data. With enough simultaneous attacks like this, there would be no resources left on the server to connect to legitimate users.

Shekyan said in his post about the tool that this type of attack could be prevented by setting up rules in the Web server's configuration that refuse connections from clients with abnormally small data window settings, and limit the lifetime of an individual request.

Kansas sees economic boost from Kansas State University, Abaxis partnership

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's partnership with Abaxis Inc., a national medical device manufacturer, is expanding veterinary medicine technologies and returning revenue to the state's economy.

The agreement with Abaxis was recently sealed with the university's Veterinary Diagnostic Lab and the Kansas State University Institute for Commercialization.

"Abaxis is a great addition for the university because it complements our expertise in animal health and it confirms what is possible when you combine education with industry," said Kirk Schulz, Kansas State University president. "The partnership will also aid Kansas State University in becoming a top 50 public research university by 2025."

The Kansas State University-Abaxis relationship pairs one of the oldest veterinary medicine schools in the U.S. with a global animal health company. Abaxis is known for its point-of-care blood analysis laboratory systems. These portable systems are designed to provide essential rapid blood measurements for the medical and veterinary fields. It requires little training and performs numerous tasks. The systems also provide all of the necessary equipment required to perform 14 medical tests and 13 veterinary tests at a rate comparable to a clinical laboratory.

The Kansas State University Institute for Commercialization works with the startup and development of intellectual properties and acts as the university's marketing and licensing agent. The partnership with Abaxis benefits Kansas State University and the Manhattan, Kan., community, said Kent Glasscock, president of the Institute for Commercialization.

"Abaxis and similar private sector endeavors will serve to create increased sponsored research, opportunities for students and faculty, and a strong economic return back to the university and regional economy," Glasscock said. "Such partnerships will help create an even longer global reach for Kansas State University, while at the same time generating returns that will serve to advance the vision of its 2025 goals."

Collaborating with Abaxis led to developing an innovative full-service commercial laboratory in Olathe, Kan., that's available to veterinarians throughout the nation. The Abaxis Veterinary Reference Laboratory, or AVRL, has all of the latest technology and is equivalent to a large-sale clinical laboratory.

In addition to enhancing the field of veterinary medicine, approximately 100 jobs will be created in the area during the next 10 years as the lab becomes fully operational.

"This partnership has allowed us to quickly begin assisting Abaxis in commercializing high quality products," Glasscock said. "The collaboration of the educated staff of Abaxis and the strength of the university's commercial arm allows for the development of superior products and efficient services."

Since starting in 1994 the institute has created more than 170 jobs in the region with salaries that average $57,000 annually. In the past decade the institute has generated nearly $165 million in new revenue within Manhattan and brings in about $1 million in revenue to the area each month.

Apple pays $5 million to settle patent lawsuit with Taiwanese chipmaker Elan

Apple has agreed to pay Taiwanese chip and touch screen maker Elan?Microelectronics Corp. $5 million to finalise an out-of-court settlement over accusations that the Cupertino-based company had infringed on its touch-based patents.

Elan Microelectronics Corp. filed a complaint asserting infringement of ?352 and other patents in the Northern District of California in April 2009. Apple counterclaimed, asserting that Elan infringed multiple Apple patents and until today, a decision had been pending.

Previously, Apple had defended claims that it had infringed on touchscreen technology in a Section 337 litigation, bringing it before the U.S?International Trade Commission. Elan sought to block imports of Apple?s MacBook products, the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

The patent ??U.S. Patent Number 5,825,352 (?Multiple fingers contact sensing method for emulating mouse buttons and mouse operations on a touch sensor pad?) ? was investigated by the ITC in April 2010, but the commission ruled in June 2010 that Elan had failed to prove that Apple had infringed on its patent.

Newswire CNA reports details the agreement between Apple and Elan announced today:

The two parties have come to an agreement that they have interactive authorization of patents, with the U.S. high-tech giant giving US$5 million to the Taiwanese firm, according to Elan.

Apple is fighting numerous patent battles around the world, claiming that Samsung and HTC have infringed on technologies protected by the company. The Cupertino-based company licensed patents registered by Nokia last year, following a lengthy court battle between the smartphone makers.

'Lost world' discovered around Antarctic vents

ScienceDaily (Jan. 3, 2012) ? Communities of species previously unknown to science have been discovered on the seafloor near Antarctica, clustered in the hot, dark environment surrounding hydrothermal vents.

The discoveries, made by teams led by the University of Oxford, University of Southampton, the National Oceanography Centre, and British Antarctic Survey, include new species of yeti crab, starfish, barnacles, and sea anemones, and even an octopus probably new to science.

For the first time researchers, using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), have been able to explore the East Scotia Ridge deep beneath the Southern Ocean where hydrothermal vents, including 'black smokers' reaching temperatures of up to 382 degrees Celsius, create a unique environment lacking sunlight but rich in certain chemicals.

The team report their findings in this week's PLoS Biology.

'Hydrothermal vents are home to animals found nowhere else on the planet that get their energy not from the Sun but from breaking down chemicals, such as hydrogen sulphide,' said Professor Alex Rogers of Oxford University's Department of Zoology, who led the research. 'The first survey of these particular vents, in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica, has revealed a hot, dark, 'lost world' in which whole communities of previously unknown marine organisms thrive.'

Highlights from the ROV dives include images showing huge colonies of the new species of yeti crab, thought to dominate the Antarctic vent ecosystem, clustered around vent chimneys. Elsewhere the ROV spotted numbers of an undescribed predatory seastar with seven arms crawling across fields of stalked barnacles and found an unidentified pale octopus nearly 2,400 metres down on the seafloor.

'What we didn't find is almost as surprising as what we did,' said Professor Rogers. 'Many animals such as tubeworms, vent mussels, vent crabs, and vent shrimps, found in hydrothermal vents in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, simply weren't there.'

The team believe that the differences between the groups of animals found around the Antarctic vents and those found around vents elsewhere suggest that the Southern Ocean may act as a barrier to some vent animals. The unique species of the East Scotia Ridge also suggest that, globally, vent ecosystems may be much more diverse, and their interactions more complex, than previously thought.

In April Professor Rogers was part of an international panel of marine scientists who gathered at Somerville College, Oxford to consider the latest research on the world's oceans. A preliminary report from the panel in June warned that the world's oceans are at risk of entering a phase of extinction of marine species unprecedented in human history.

'These findings are yet more evidence of the precious diversity to be found throughout the world's oceans,' said Professor Rogers. 'Everywhere we look, whether it is in the sunlit coral reefs of tropical waters or these Antarctic vents shrouded in eternal darkness, we find unique ecosystems that we need to understand and protect.'

ROV dives were conducted with the help of the crews of RRS James Cook and RRS James Clark Ross. The discoveries were made as part of a consortium project with partners from the University of Oxford, University of Southampton, University of Bristol, Newcastle University, British Antarctic Survey, National Oceanography Centre, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution supported by the UK's Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the US National Science Foundation (NSF).

A report of the research, entitled 'The discovery of new deep-sea hydrothermal vent communities in the Southern Ocean and implications for biogeography', is published this week in PLoS Biology.
