UN Security Council envoys to discuss Syria debate (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Ambassadors to the U.N. Security Council were meeting Wednesday afternoon for a closed session on a draft resolution calling for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step aside, diplomats said.

Council diplomats speaking on condition of anonymity because the talks are private said they hope to get a sense of whether Russia will negotiate on the text.

Russian officials have said they'll oppose the resolution if it contains any hint of a military intervention or regime change in Syria, a major ally.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the foreign ministers of Britain and France joined Arab League officials in a high-level meeting at the U.N. on Tuesday urging council members to approve the resolution.

Martin Nesirky, the spokesman for the U.N. secretary-general, said Wednesday that Ban Ki-moon hopes the international community, and the Security Council in particular, will respond to the violence in Syria with "a unified voice."

"He's concerned that as time passes more people are being killed," Nesirky said. "The need for action is because of the need to stop the killing."

Amnesty International called on Russia to stop what it said was its "unconscionable" obstruction of U.N. efforts to help end the bloodshed in Syria. The U.N. said several weeks ago that at least 5,400 people have been killed in the 10-month-old government crackdown on a civilian uprising.

Russia and China used a double veto in October to block an earlier Security Council resolution condemning the violence in Syria.

"Russia's threats to abort a binding U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria for the second time are utterly irresponsible," Jose Luis Diaz, Amnesty International's U.N. representative, said Wednesday.

"Russia bears a heavy responsibility for allowing the brutal crackdown on legitimate dissent in Syria to continue unchecked," he said.

Diaz noted that Russia is the Syrian government's largest overseas arms supplier and reportedly has continued arms shipments to the country in recent weeks.

Great Home Improvement DIY Ideas Are Easy To Find ...

We tend to think you could start reading about cheap storage sheds and easily spend a huge amount of time on this one subject, alone. However, not everybody has the time or inclination to do that, and we know that so many of us are incredibly busy ? but still, sometimes you just have to do what is smart. If you are not ever quite satisfied with what you know or have just read, then that should compel you to keep digging. Following this comprehensive approach will ultimately enable you to function much more competently only because you will know what needs to be understood. The knowledge base on the following subject matter is one thing that can really make a difference with it in your affairs.

Even when you have the ability to do your home improvement jobs, it might be better to hire them out, if you don?t have enough time. Either choice is fine, provided you understand what?s involved. You can end up costing yourself money, if you underestimate how long it will take you, so make sure you are fully prepared before you start. Home improvement projects that you want to do yourself, will be easier to plan with the helpful tips from this article.

Safety is an important factor that should never be overlooked, when doing home repairs of any kind. The necessary precautions should always be taken, when working around construction materials, tools and other equipment, but it isn?t always. Using tools and materials can be harmful to your eyes, so eye protection is very important. A lot of things, from plaster to wood chips, can get into your eyes from the many tasks you will be doing. To keep from damaging your hearing around the loud power tools, ear protection is vital. Unless you want to have permanent hearing loss, then you should protect your ears when you are going to be next to high decibel sounds for extended periods. A particle mask can save you from having breathing problems, stemming from the toxic substances, such as dust, mold and insulation which you breathe in.storage shed

If you want to change the look of your home, and can afford it, then remodel your kitchen. Just because you can?t afford to remodel the whole kitchen, doesn?t mean that you can?t make a bunch of little changes. It can be expensive buying new cabinets, but you can get a different look by replacing the doors. If your countertops are looking faded, there are attractive but low-cost laminate countertops that could make a big difference. Some of your kitchen appliances may also need replacing, especially if they?re not energy-efficient. A new paint job in a different color, can make your cabinets look new, while having a dramatic effect.

No information by itself will move you to action, and that is true for wood shed plans, as well. Most people, the majority of them, do nothing all throughout their lives and nothing good happens from that.

Dare to be different in the sense that you will get up and move on this ? go forward, be bold and willing to do something. There is really a form of momentum in our lives, and the hard part for most is just simply getting started.

Therefor, think how you can best make good utility from what you are reading and then go forward. We are about halfway there, so let?s press ahead and discover some more. Saving money is the most important reason for doing home improvement jobs by yourself. When choosing materials or tools, you don?t want to skimp on quality.

Items that are used or recycled and have good quality can be used, but don?t let the results of the project be affected by cheap materials. When you need to paint either the outside of your house or inside, you need to choose the right paint. Cheap paint may save you a few dollars, but it won?t look as good nor last as long as high quality paint. In most cases, inexpensive materials fall apart quicker, so items like cheap tile which will break in a year or two, should not be purchased.

Now that you are finished with these suggestions, you know more about home improvement projects and how to do them yourself. There are now many resources for finding information on this topic, from the internet to books and magazines to TV shows. Anything can be accomplished when you do the right planning, such as remodel a room, make some repairs or even add-on to your house. Improving your home by yourself can be done very easily by planning it all out.

Five Favorite Films with Daniel Radcliffe

"It's actually a thrill to be talking about something else," Daniel Radcliffe chuckles, pausing to consider a question about his new movie The Woman in Black. He is, of course, referring to the ubiquitous presence of a certain blockbuster franchise that has consumed almost half of his life on the planet. Radcliffe was just an untested 11-year-old when cast as the eponymous hero of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone way back in 2001; now, having triumphantly wrapped the series with last year's Deathly Hallows, he's a seasoned 22 and ready to spirit himself into the realm that lies beyond Hogwarts.

"To be honest," Radcliffe admits, "I want to just cram in as many, and as diverse a range, of parts in films as I possibly can in the next few years -- while I'm in this stage of transition from out of the world of Potter."

Though he's done a couple of small films between his wizarding gig (and received praise for his stage work in Equus), The Woman in Black represents the first significant step in the actor's post-Potter direction. Based on a popular English novel and produced under the vintage Hammer label, the Gothic horror is set in a remote village whose children are being terrorized by the specter of dead woman. Radcliffe plays the young lawyer dispatched to investigate -- and it's a role the actor hopes will help cultivate a new screen image.

"The fact that the part is different, in that I'm playing older and I'm playing a father; there's stuff that will physically separate me from Harry in people's minds," he explains. "But what's more important to me is that the story of this film is so compelling -- that even if people go in thinking, "Oh let's see how he does in his next thing," within, like, 15 minutes they're going to be, hopefully, wrapped up in the story; because it's a great story, and really compelling and scary."

Audiences will have their chance to see Radcliffe's transformation (and marvel at his dashing new accoutrements) when The Woman in Black opens in theaters this week. In the meantime, we asked him to talk through his all-time five favorite films.

My five favorite films change all the time. Well, no -- the top three never change, but the last two are kind of up for grabs constantly. 12 Angry Men is, I think, a feat of writing. It's brilliant. The fact that it all takes place in one room -- I think there's maybe two minutes, three minutes of screen time that is not in the one room in that film -- and yet it is one of the most compelling things I've ever seen. I mean, you can't look away. You're gripped by the dynamics between the people, by what's gonna happen, and by the fact that it's a whodunit, based in one room, which is brilliant.

I think A Matter of Life and Death is one of the great works of imagination in cinema. It's a brilliant story. David Niven could not be more charming in it if he tried. He starts off, you know, as a World War II pilot about to crash his plane whilst quoting Andrew Marvell down the phone to the mayday operator, who he then falls in love with. There is one shot in it, actually, of the heavenly court before it goes into session, which we absolutely -- and I haven't actually spoken to Mike Newell about this -- but we lifted almost identically for the start of the Triwizard tournament in Potter, in the fourth film. There is one shot -- because I think I watched Matter of Life and Death shortly after we finished that film -- which I watched and went, "Oh my god, we've just stolen that!"

Well if you're gonna steal, steal from the Archers.

Absolutely; if you're gonna steal, you can't do much better than those guys. So that would be one of my favorite films. Possibly -- possibly -- even more than 12 Angry Men.

Dr. Strangelove showed me, I suppose taught me, a lot about comedy. The stuff that's funniest is the stuff that scares us most -- because all good comedy comes out of fear of death, fear of humiliation, fear of public awkwardness, fear of, you know, all those kinds of things. To have truly, really dark comedy where at the end of the film everyone in the world dies, that was very funny to me. I went to the Kubrick exhibition and there was this whole section on how originally the film had ended with a gigantic pie fight, and it was cut; but in a way I get what that might have been going for -- the fact that it is all so ridiculous.

Little Miss Sunshine: I find it to be the sweetest, funniest... it's a modern classic, I think. And I think Steve Carell is brilliant in it; heartbreaking. Also the fact that it came out of nowhere -- that I went to the cinema knowing nothing about it.

The fifth, because it is the film of my childhood, and I still think the skeleton sequence is one of the scariest effects sequences ever, is Jason and the Argonauts. That is the film that, within the first six months of a relationship of any girl that I'm with, I have to make her watch that film -- and if she doesn't react the way I'd like, then that's kind of a deal-breaker. If you don't like Harryhausen's stop-motion then you are not going to be in my life. [Laughs]

Has it ever come to that?

No, fortunately not. Fortunately I think that they all picked up that the stakes were quite high -- so at least they pretended to like it.

Really, what kind of awful person wouldn't like it?

You really have to kind of just have a heart of stone to not be able to get into that film, 'cause it's just brilliant. You know the other film I like? The Vikings, that Tony Curtis-Kirk Douglas one. It's really good, just because it's... well, it's Vikings; but I think Ernest Borgnine plays, like, Ragnar, the king of the Vikings, and it's a hysterical film -- 'cause made in the '50s, and there are these shots where they're panning down the rows of Vikings and they've all got horned helmets and scraggly hair, and then you get to Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas who're just perfectly coiffed, beautiful men still. [Laughs]

Major GOP 'super PAC' raised $51 million in 2011 (AP)

WASHINGTON ? American Crossroads, the Republican "super" political committee that plans to play a major role in this year's presidential campaign, raised more than $51 million along with its nonprofit arm last year, The Associated Press has learned.

The figures from Crossroads ? the group backed by former George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove ? were among the first financial reports being made public Tuesday, the deadline for super PACs and presidential candidates to file financial reports with federal election officials.

While most recent public attention has focused on groups spending major sums for negative TV ads assailing GOP presidential primary rivals Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, Tuesday's figures are a sign of even greater spending to come in the general election battle between the Republican nominee and Democratic President Barack Obama.

Other super PACs required to disclose their donors Tuesday include Restore Our Future, the Romney-leaning PAC that has contributed to a deluge of ads hammering Gingrich, and Winning Our Future, the Gingrich-supportive group that has been critical of Romney's time at a venture capital firm. Both super PACs are run in part by former advisers to the candidates.

The American Crossroads PAC has about $15.6 million cash on hand, according to its recent report from October through December 2011, representing only part of the money it has in the bank to spend on defeating Obama. Financial details from Crossroads GPS ? the nonprofit arm ? are unclear because it doesn't have to disclose its donors under IRS rules, although Crossroads GPS was responsible for most of the groups' fundraising haul.

The Crossroads war chests underscore the extraordinary impact super PACs could have on this year's race for the White House. In GOP primaries so far, groups working for or against presidential candidates have spent roughly $25 million on TV ads ? about half the nearly $53 million spent on advertising so far to influence voters in the early weeks of the race.

Crossroads' financial reports, which the AP obtained ahead of the Federal Election Commission, identify wealthy donors who had given contributions reaching as high as seven figures by the end of 2011. Among the largest contributors is Dallas businessman Harold Simmons, who gave the group $5 million last November and whose holding company, Contran Corp., donated an additional $2 million.

Simmons is a major donor to GOP and conservative causes who pumped as much as $4 million into the "swift boat" campaign that helped sink Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry in 2004. Simmons, an early supporter of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's presidential run, also was a fundraising "bundler" putting donations together for Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Other super PACs have already had a major effect this primary season. One group, for instance, effectively saved Newt Gingrich's candidacy, while another tore into him in Florida and elsewhere. At the minimum, the groups' spending is a precursor to the general election ? when super PACs aligned with both Republicans and Obama plan to dole out even larger sums.

These groups are the products of a 2010 Supreme Court ruling that removed restrictions on corporate and union spending in federal elections. The groups can't directly coordinate with the candidates they support, but many are staffed with former campaign workers who have an intimate knowledge of a favored candidate's strategy.

Since this summer, the groups have spent tens of millions on ads in key GOP primary states like Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida. The PACs have also unleashed millions on expenses typically reserved for campaigns, including direct mailings, phone calls and get-out-the-vote efforts.

Few groups are likely to be as influential as American Crossroads, which plans to raise hundreds of millions of dollars this election cycle and enlists support from high-profile GOP figures such as former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour.

Crossroads' financial reports show other large donors such as Joseph W. Craft III, a Tulsa businessman whose Alliance Holdings, a major coal producer, gave $425,000. Other contributions include: $500,000 from Dallas-based Crow Holdings; $250,000 from Chicago philanthropist and GOP supporter Janet Duchossois, and $100,000 from Sam Zell, a Chicago real estate billionaire whose Tribune media company is now in bankruptcy.

Outside spending by individuals isn't new. Liberal-leaning billionaire George Soros gave more than $20 million to help groups supportive of Kerry ? these groups were known as "527" organizations ? and his 2004 White House bid. But the high court's Citizens United ruling essentially gave a green light to individuals who want to pump unlimited sums into outside groups that would in turn support candidates.

The Obama campaign on Tuesday disclosed a list of 61 people who raised at least half a million dollars for the president's re-election efforts. Among them are movie producers Jeffrey Katzenberg and Harvey Weinstein and embattled former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, whose $70,000 in contributions from himself and his wife were refunded by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

A handful of other financial filings began trickling in to the Federal Election Commission Tuesday afternoon, including those from the Gingrich campaign. It said the former House speaker raised $10 million during the fourth quarter, in addition to $5 million this month. Those totals are separate from super PAC money being spent on his behalf by outside groups.

Perry, the Texas governor who was an early star in the Republican primaries, raised an anemic $2.9 million this past quarter, compared with $17.2 million within the first two months of his entering the race last summer. The Jon Huntsman-leaning Our Destiny super PAC raised about $2.8 million ? with more than $1.8 million coming from his father, Jon Huntsman Sr.

Endorse Liberty, a group supportive of libertarian-leaning Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, said it raised $3.9 million for online advertising in key primary states.
