American Container / Thinking about getting a bird to keep me ...

I?m just starting to do a little bit or research and was thinking about getting a bird as a pet. I have a question, which bird is more likely to be friendly and interactive with people? A parrot or sulphur crested cockatoo? Are they allowed to be kept as pets? I?m in Australia. Anyhoo, thanks.

If you?d like anything else to tell me, please do so.

Also, about clipping the bird?s wings, I?m not sure about that? Do you think, if I get a bird, should get its wings clips? I?d like to let it have some freedom but don?t want them to fly away, maybe I need to develop trust with the bird.

If you have the time and energy to get one then I would suggest starting research on the breed you will like by watching youtube.com videos. There are so many different types of birds, companion birds though are extremely smart and therefore allot of work.

I mean really smart and you have to provide different toys, fresh foods, and face to face contact several hours a day to be a good pet bird owner. These birds are built to roam jungles and deserts respectively so the amount of work it takes to keep them happy is great but also varies between species and even breeds of species.

There are several types of parrots each with different personality traits.I have a sun conure, great companion birds but require allot of work and constant thinking to keep them trained well and happy.Other conures have different personalities so depending on how much interaction you are looking for you can pick the right bird for you.

I do not clip my birds wings all the way down, you can clip them to the point where they are still confident to fly around a bit but cannot go flying into the sunset on you.You have to be careful with this though because when scared adrenaline will shoot your bird way up to a tree or across the street into the neighbors tall trees. To make a bird whom is born to fly sit on its feet its entire life is not fair.with the proper recall training you will never have an issue of losing your bird. (YouTube Videos are available on this subject)It does not matter how much trust or how much your bird loves you, they will fly away if you do not trim the wings or expose them to recall training.

Larger birds live upwards of 25 years in captivity, this is a big decision and you should take your time, and visit different birds. To rehome a parrot can kill them, they become devestated some times when they lose thier owners so you must have a family member in line to take him if something happens, have a vet savings fund for if they get sick or hurt and for checkups, in addition to fresh fruits, vegetables and grains every day along with water changes at least twice a day along with cleaning the cage once a week.Lots-O-Work

A parrot always is fun to have around and are really interactive. I think for a bird to keep you company, I?d choose the parrot.
