?Sam?s Top Secret Journal? Pronounces Value of Differently-Abled Children

Dad and Author Sean Adelman Says His ?Sassy? Daughter was the Inspiration for His Main Character ? a Young Detective with Down Syndrome

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) October 25, 2012

One blessing Sean Adelman counts in being a father is what he?s learned from his three children, which has inspired him to write ?Sam?s Top Secret Journal? (http://www.raiseexpectations.com), the first in a Nancy Drew-style children?s book series featuring a protagonist with Down syndrome.

?I think most parents have this experience that, while it?s our job to teach our children how to grow up and function in a society, we are constantly learning ourselves,? says Adelman, a practicing orthopedic surgeon. ?They force us to rethink the basics as we help mold them into mature human beings.?

His high-school age daughter, Dev, is a ?bright, funny, sometimes sassy high school cheerleader with lots of friends,? he says, adding that other people with Down syndrome are artists, actors and athletes, college students and comics. His new book series (http://tinyurl.com/8tjua3z) for pre-teens illustrates how the protagonist, Sam, is in the same boat as other children, with different abilities, including a big heart.

Sam is a middle school girl with Down syndrome living a normal life ? except when she is occasionally bullied for the differences kids perceive in her. As the book unfolds, readers see that she is just like any of her friends. She likes to play basketball, perform in community plays, gossip about boys at lunchtime and write about life in her top-secret journal. As her Uncle Alex is soon to come home from Iraq, her home is bustling with activity in preparation for his visit.

But strange happenings begin to disturb her community, and that?s when Sam?s carefree life becomes dangerously serious. A shady man in a trench coat has stolen donuts from the bake sale, money is disappearing from donation jars at the farmer?s market, and ? worst of all ? her friend Michael has gone missing and could be in real danger.

Sam teams up with her quick-witted, gadget-savvy little brother, John, and is determined to solve Seattle?s most recent set of mysteries, with much more at stake than donuts.

Twenty-five percent of the book?s profits are being donated to inclusion-focused non-profits and/or wounded soldier charities, Adelman says.

?I loved the characters so much I stayed up last night to finish the book!? writes Amazon reviewer M. Fox.

?This ambitious book for children hits the mark more often than not,? writes a Kirkus reviewer. ?There's a lot to like about a mystery/adventure for preteens that takes on bullying, disabilities and a girl's growing need for independence and Adelman manages to weave each of those topics into a compelling story for young readers.?

About Sean Adelman

Sean Adelman is a practicing orthopedic surgeon and advocate for exceptional kids in Seattle. He and his wife, Susan, have three children. Adelman wrote the ?Sam?s Top Secret Journal? series to show the similarities the protagonist shares with other children, and to explore how differently-abled individuals benefit society.

Real Estate Land Law

By?HONEST ALF?? the Little Guy Lawyer?

This is part 3 of a 4 part series ? please see?Part 1?and?Part 2?before reading this part

Real estate, as we have discussed, includes a bundle of rights or ?estates? but what is included in the term?

Basically it refers to anything permanently affixed or attached to the land such as trees, rocks, growing crops, topsoil.? That?s not hard to imagine but the fun begins when mankind starts adding things, such as a house or a fence or a barn ? isn?t it always the case that mankind can find ways to complicate things?

Anything attached to the land we call a ?fixture? ? anything not ?attached? is personal property.? Therefore, a toilet sitting on display at a plumbing store is personal property ? we call it a ?chattel? ? but, when that toilet is connected into the plumbing system of a building, it becomes a ?fixture? such that when I buy that building, the connected toilet comes with it.

A lot of ?fixtures? are pretty easy to identify ? light fixtures, heating fixtures, plumbing ? but sometimes there are grey areas which can cause disputes.? If you buy a house and you see a pretty child?s swing set in the back yard, you might be upset, after the deal closes, to find that it was just resting on the ground and has disappeared.? It reminds me of the old adage: ??When in doubt, spell it out? ? when buying real estate, spell out clearly in your Agreement of Purchase and Sale what items are to be included in the price.??It will cut down the ?surprise? and ?disappointment? factors when you move in.

A number of RICS education programs are now available under this joint initiative, at foundation or advanced levels, to suit professionals with different skill levels. Enrolments will begin from October 15.

The duration of these programs ranges from two weeks to 6 months and will be through different formats including distance learning, workshops or and combinations of both. Some of these have been developed and will be conducted in partnership with other academic institutions. ?These courses have been structured primarily for working professionals and are economically priced for people engaged across all levels of the property lifecycle to up-skill and meet the challenges of an ever changing and dynamic sector,? says the press statement.

The key areas the programmes will cover are construction project management, quantity survey, building inspection and quality control, facilities management, real estate and finance and valuations. On completion of the programmes, participants will receive certificates from RICS. The first batch of workshops will be held in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and other metro cities (that?ll depend on the number of enrolments).

Film Review: Killing Them Softly | Sassi Sam Girlie Gossip Files

Directed by: Andrew Dominik
Starring: Brad Pitt, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Scoot McNairy, Richard Jenkins,
Sassi?s Star Rating: 3/5

Frankie (Scoot McNairy) isn?t very bright. Neither is Russell (Ben Mendelsohn). When the two decide to rob a mob?s poker game, everything goes surprisingly well. But repercussions come in the form of Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt) and his guns ? the metal ones ? not his arms.

If you?re a fan of Brad Pitt, crime dramas, dark humour, and bloody violence you may really like this. If you prefer Brad Pitt strutting around fields with his shirt off, we don?t blame you, but this may not be your kind of flick.

The film is adapted from George V. Higgin?s novel, Cogan?s Trade. Directed by Andrew Dominik, Killing them Softly neatly ties around the collapse of the American economy. Unsurprisingly, Pitt steals the show with his?effortless acting as a smart, adept killer that knows how the world really works. He guides viewers through the meandering plot, as he seeks to gun down his incompetent targets. But it?s a hard time for everyone, including hard people.

Join Pitt and his guns as he seeks to restore his own sense of order.

Killing them Softly, in cinemas now.

Love
Allison

PFT: Delhomme understands pressure on Cam

628x471AP

There are no real one-to-one correlations to Cam Newton?s place in Charlotte right now.

Prior to the Panthers drafting him first overall last year, the city?s biggest sports personality was a basketball player with a national shoe deal which required him to wear a dress for commercials (Larry Johnson as Grandmama).

But perhaps the guy who can most closely identify with him is former Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme, who came out of nowhere to lead the team to a Super Bowl in his first year as a starter. And having been to the highest highs, and had the city turn on him after a disastrous game in the 2008 playoffs, Delhomme knows about pressure.

?They?ve sort of hung the moon on Cam in Charlotte,? Delhomme said, via Steve Reed of the Associated Press. ?The expectations on him to lead this franchise are incredible. We have to remember he?s 23 years old. He?s still a kid.?

Truth be told, Newton?s numbers aren?t that different after five games this year as last. But the Panthers are 1-4, he?s coming off his worst game as a pro, and a bye week is keeping him from changing the narrative in a town that?s down.

Delhomme said Newton has to keep it from being all about himself, having gone through a similar downturn in 2004. The Panthers followed their Super Bowl berth with a 1-7 start which included losing Steve Smith to a broken ankle in the opener, and Delhomme felt the pressure.

?I?m thinking, man what am I doing wrong?? Delhomme said. ?You find yourself preparing as hard you can, watching as much film as you can and then you?re like, ?Why isn?t coming through during the game?? It just eats you up. It tears you apart. But finally I realized I was trying to do too much. You have to trust what you do and not try to do too much.

?There?s a fine line there.?

The burden on Newton might not be fair, but it is real. How his team responds will depend largely on how he plays, and the careers of players and coaches and staff hang in the balance.

A diamond bigger than Earth?

LONDON (Reuters) - Forget the diamond as big as the Ritz. This one's bigger than planet Earth.

Orbiting a star that is visible to the naked eye, astronomers have discovered a planet twice the size of our own made largely out of diamond.

The rocky planet, called '55 Cancri e', orbits a sun-like star in the constellation of Cancer and is moving so fast that a year there lasts a mere 18 hours.

Discovered by a U.S.-Franco research team, its radius is twice that of Earth's but it is much more dense with a mass eight times greater. It is also incredibly hot, with temperatures on its surface reaching 3,900 degrees Fahrenheit (1,648 Celsius).

"The surface of this planet is likely covered in graphite and diamond rather than water and granite," said Nikku Madhusudhan, the Yale researcher whose findings are due to be published in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The study - with Olivier Mousis at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie in Toulouse, France - estimates that at least a third of the planet's mass, the equivalent of about three Earth masses, could be diamond.

Diamond planets have been spotted before but this is the first time one has been seen orbiting a sun-like star and studied in such detail.

"This is our first glimpse of a rocky world with a fundamentally different chemistry from Earth," Madhusudhan said, adding that the discovery of the carbon-rich planet meant distant rocky planets could no longer be assumed to have chemical constituents, interiors, atmospheres, or biologies similar to Earth.

David Spergel, an astronomer at Princeton University, said it was relatively simple to work out the basic structure and history of a star once you know its mass and age.

"Planets are much more complex. This 'diamond-rich super-Earth' is likely just one example of the rich sets of discoveries that await us as we begin to explore planets around nearby stars."

"Nearby" is a relative concept in astronomy. Any fortune-hunter not dissuaded by "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", F.Scott Fitzgerald's jazz age morality tale of thwarted greed, will find Cancri e about 40 light years, or 230 trillion miles, from Park Avenue.

BASF and D?rr conduct holistic eco-efficiency analysis of application ...

  • Study compares efficiency of products and processes to impacts on the environment
  • Analysis allows BASF and D?rr to individually improve eco-efficiency of OEM coating
  • High eco-efficiency with Integrated Processes?

?

M?nster . Integrated Processes without primer or with wet-on-wet application offer significant advantages for OEM coating for both business and the environment. On top of that, modern paintline and application technologies can considerably boost eco-efficiency. These are the findings of the recent comprehensive eco-efficiency analysis performed by BASF and D?rr, which used a holistic perspective to examine the paintline and coating technology. The results of the study permit the two companies to individually improve the eco-efficiency of OEM coatings at the car manufacturers? plants.?

?

The coating process is one of the most energy-intensive process steps in industrial automotive manufacturing. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), energy consumption and CO2 balance play a major role. ? The study confirms the path we have consistently followed for some three decades as we have developed waterborne, solvent-reduced or solvent-free paint systems. For instance, as early as 25 years ago, we introduced the first waterborne paint for OEM coating. We?re pioneers and technological leaders in this area ,? said Dr. Walter Jouck, head of technology management at BASF Coatings.

?

The eco-efficiency analysis developed by BASF looks at environmental impact in proportion to a product's cost-effectiveness. It helps BASF and its customers decide which products are the best choice, both ecologically and economically. To this end, eco-efficiency analysis examines the entire life cycle of a product or process from raw materials sourcing to product manufacture and use, as well as disposal. The most important results of the current study refer to coating processes with primer, shortened coating processes and the use of state-of-the-art paintline and application technologies.??

?

Waterborne systems score thanks to their low VOC levels

In processes with primers, BASF and D?rr studied the most important versions of solventborne and waterborne paint systems used in industry. The detailed findings show that waterborne processes consume more energy (air conditioning of the spraybooth and an additional intermediate dryer), thus causing more CO 2emissions than processes with solventborne paint. On the other hand, waterborne processes involve significantly lower emissions of solvents (VOCs). As a result, in the study, the waterborne processes show overall good results with respect to eco-efficiency.

?

Improving eco-efficiency with Integrated Processes

Integrated Processes are shortened coating processes in which the primer and, in turn, a baking step are eliminated. In the eco-efficiency study, both solventborne and waterborne Integrated Processes were evaluated compared to conventional primer processes. The results show a clear advantage for the shortened processes with regard to energy consumption, CO 2 balance and VOC emissions. For instance, energy consumption and CO2 balance are each reduced by approximately 20 percent. When the potential for saving VOCs is compared, a significant improvement between waterborne standard processes and waterborne Integrated Processes is revealed. In general, for this reason, the Integrated Processes show a significantly higher eco-efficiency compared to the conventional primer processes.

?

Modern paintline and application technologies boost eco-efficiency

Improved modern paintline and application technologies can considerably boost the eco-efficiency of the coating process. For example, significant potential for savings is yielded with respect to the energy consumption of the spraybooths if they are operated with recirculating air. This technique allows the solvents to be removed efficiently from the spraybooth air by means of post-combustion. As a result, the eco-efficiency can also be significantly improved with solventborne processes.

?

?The analysis helps us offer our customers individualized advice, so that a solution can be provided for the car manufacturer that is optimal in terms of environmental friendliness and costs,? explained Dr. Alexander Haunschild, head of OEM Coatings Solutions Europe at BASF. ?After all, the conditions and the impact factors at the car manufacturers and their plants vary. For this reason, there is no standard answer to the question as to which process is best. However, based on the analysis, BASF and D?rr can supply the best application process and the best application technology for each customer plant individually.??

?

Scope of the study ?

BASF established this holistic method as early as 1996 and was one of the first companies in the chemical industry to do so. Eco-efficiency analysis is validated by T?V (German technical inspection and certification organization) and by NSF (National Sanitation Foundation). This study on the eco-efficiency of coating processes includes the raw materials of the coatings, the manufacturing process of the coatings, along with the energies and emissions required for this process. In addition, all energies, emissions, consumptions and costs during coating are identified. On the other hand, the study identifies all costs incurred during product manufacturing or use. This economic analysis, together with the assessment of the overall environmental impact, serves as a basis for eco-efficiency comparisons. The study does not refer to specific plants. Instead, the comparability of the statistics is ensured through realistic assumptions on consumptions, emissions and costs. A review by DEKRA, the German motor vehicle inspection association, confirms that the studied was performed in accordance with ISO 14040 and 14044.

Newcastle United?s ?24million sponsorship-deal with?Wonga?? the high-interest, short term "payday" loan company, has generated a great deal of opposing comments from both supporters of, and opposition, to the new sponsors. Business students may consider this alongside the role of sponsorship within the context of marketing ? is any publicity good publicity? Or will this debate simply harm the fortunes of (my beloved) NUFC and/or wonga.com?

A?news report on the UK growth of these firms can be found here

The whole debate might also be considered in the ?business ethics? part of your Business Studies course. Sponsorship has long caused debate on the ethical sides with sponsorships from alcoholic beverages to cigarette manufacturers being in the media in recent years. Here are some opposing views to kick off the debate:?MP?s who attacked wonga.com and the sponsorship deal immediately, followed by a?defence of Newcastle United?s right to accept their cash??and a warning that some of the?players may not accept the sponsorship based on their beliefs.?

In order to come to a well-balanced and analytical viewpoint, you could even?change your mind as quickly as this supporter (?subtitles not included)!

Magic Pets Review | Gamezebo

If the pet battling genre has its own battle cry, it?s got to be the beloved ?Gotta catch ?em all? of Nintendo?s Pokemon. And to be sure, once you find a good entry in the genre, there?s a lot of fun in scooping up all of the collectible pets, learning their abilities, and battling them with your friends. But it?s the pets we want to collect; not the games.

Whenever a new pet battler arrives on the scene, it needs to stand at least a notch or two above its competition to warrant attention, and it?s not immediately clear if Magic Pets achieves this goal. It has spunk, sure, and there?s little wrong with it from a technical standpoint, but its novelties are few.

Magic Pets

Yet that?s not to say that it?s poorly executed pet battler. If you want a story to go along with your pet battles, it has that. And the illustrations for the story prompts go a step beyond the stylized fluff we usually see on Facebook. You shouldn?t expect the next great evolutionary step in social storytelling here, but it goes a step further than most games of this type, it?s fun to watch some of narrative play out on the screen. Sometimes you?ll need to rescue NPCs from brambles, but most of the time you?ll battle various bosses as you amass the titular magic pets.

It?s a shame that the variety breaks down on the visual design of the characters you play and interact with, as the core gameplay centers on social sprites who looked as though they wandered over from FarmVille.

It doesn?t take long to realize that this decision exists for a reason; namely, you eventually start building a farm-like compound to house and feed the many pets you acquire across your battles. Even the process of finding new battles coveys this unmistakable feeling of familiarity, particularly in the way you eventually need to clear the fog surrounding your camp? for an alarming glob of gold in order to click on rocks and trees to find more pets to battle and possibly capture.

Magic Pets

The battles themselves are fun, but predictable, with the animals gaining their strengths or weaknesses through their alignment with the elements of earth, wind, fire, or water. It?s here, though, where both the social and payment options come into play. The runes needed to capture pets take several hours to craft without assistance. What?s more, you start out with a mere two slots for swapping pets in battle, and gaining more (which eventually becomes essential) requires purchasing the premium rubies. You?ll especially want these slots if you plan on participating in the PvP matches, but alas, these consist of little more than battle AI based on another player?s pets and thus don?t differ considerably from battles you?ll fight while leveling.?

For all that, Magic Pets works well enough; it?s just that it feels too similar to games we?ve already played before and its limited animations may chase away players who want a little more ?oomph? to their battles. Worse, slow leveling and social limitations on hatching pets also forces the experience to devolve into a grind at times, and it?s thus something of a frustrating game to play without many friends. But if you?re still a fan of both the aging FarmVille social template and the Pokemon-like experience of collecting and battling pets, Magic Pets is at least worth a try. There are literally dozens of different pets to collect here, and with frequent updates and an unusually interactive development team, Magic Pets will likely only get better with time.

Free product returns have major impact on future sales, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 9, 2012) ? Contrary to economic research that suggested tougher return policies, a new study published in the September issue of the Journal of Marketing strongly recommends a policy of universal free product returns for online and distant retailers.

The study, "Return Shipping Policies of Online Retailers: Normative Assumptions and the Long-Term Consequences of Fee and Free Returns," was conducted by Amanda Bower, professor of business administration/marketing at Washington and Lee University's Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics. She was the lead author with James G. Maxham III, the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company Professor of Commerce at the University of Virginia.

The research was conducted in field studies with two leading online retailers over 49 months using two surveys and customer spending data. It demonstrated that when consumers received free shipping on returned items, their purchases over the next two years increased by between 58 percent and 357 percent.

In contrast, when consumers had to pay for return shipping, their subsequent purchases decreased by between 74 percent and 100 percent.

Product returns are a widespread and expensive problem for retailers. For example, product returns of consumer electronics cost retailers and manufacturers almost $17 billion in 2011, representing a 21 percent increase in returns since 2007. Consequently, online and distant retailers are motivated to limit or avoid paying return shipping costs.

According to Bower, many retailers have adopted an "equity-based" return shipping policy, where the retailer determines who is to blame for the product return -- the customer or the retailer -- and assigns responsibility for the return shipping costs accordingly.

"Obviously, their philosophy is that if it's your fault, you'll be fine paying for it, and it won't affect your future spending at all," said Bower. "So we wanted to look at that assumption and determine how consumers actually act. What we found was that, on almost every count, retailers who have these equity-based shipping policies are completely wrong."

The study found that the number one response that determined whether consumers would buy from a retailer again, based on whether they did or didn't pay have to pay return shipping, was regret or the anticipation of regret.

"For example, I've already paid $7 shipping and the piece of clothing arrives at my home. I try it on and it doesn't fit," explained Bower. "Now I've got to pay $7 return shipping, so I'm out $14 and I don't have anything. I've paid that money for the privilege of trying on clothing. So the really dominant driving characteristic is how much do I regret having spent $7 on return shipping in the past, and is it really worth it to risk paying that money again in the future?

"In contrast, free returns are similar to the saying 'What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?'"

The study also discovered other reasons customers base future purchases on shipping charges. For example, customers believe that retailers have a greater responsibility to absorb return shipping costs as part of the cost of doing business. Equity-based shipping return policies also assume that less blame to the retailer necessarily means more responsibility to the customer, whereas customers assess blame independently -- it could be nobody's fault. In addition, retailers' attempts at assigning blame in a manner consistent with the perceptions of customers are largely inaccurate, getting it right approximately as often as they get it wrong.

Bower noted that retailers do not have to rely on the study to judge consumer sentiment on the issue. "Marketers can look at their own data and see if this is something that would work for them," she said. "It's the proverbial 'don't take our word for it.' The only caveat I would put on that is that if they look at their own data set they should make sure they aren't only seeing what they want to see."

Bower acknowledged that one of retailers' concerns is that people could abuse a free return policy. "It's interesting that for the two years after they returned a product, not one of the customers in our study returned another product. It's fairly easy to quickly find people who are abusing the system. But punishing everybody because of a couple of people is not good for the retailer in the long run.

According to Bower, retailers need to look more at establishing a positive and trustworthy relationship with customers by not trying to make each discrete exchange a plus for the retailer.

"I'm fascinated by questioning and researching fundamental assumptions people make about how consumers behave, and the counterproductive things that marketers do," said Bower. "Retailers need to have a firm grip on reality, on how consumers are actually going to act, not on what retailers think consumers should do or what they consider fair."

The study appears in the Journal of Marketing, Volume 76, Number 5, September 2012, published by the American Marketing Association,

Avira Antivirus Free 2013

It's hard to make money if you give your product away for free, yet quite a few antivirus vendors do just that. Some of them offer a free version for home users and an effectively identical commercial version for business users. Avira Antivirus Free 2013 doesn't quite fit that model. The company's premium antivirus, which I'll review separately, includes additional protective features, among them cloud protection, behavioral detection, and access to remote-control tech support.?

Avira's main window has a lot going on, because it includes links to all the features of the paid edition and the full security suite. Most of the window is devoted to common tasks like checking for updates, launching a scan, or turning protection on and off. A panel at left contains links to detailed configuration and other tasks.

Clicking a button at lower right takes you to Avira's new "Experts Market," which is currently in beta. Experts from around the world can sign up to provide support, posting profiles of their special expertise. You submit your problem, choose an expert, and work out a price. Much like an online auction site, experts accumulate a reputation based on ratings by those they've helped.

Installation Failures
When I hit problems in testing, I relied on basic tech support, not the Experts Market. And wow, did I ever hit problems. Malware forced a reboot during install on one system, which required a repair/reinstall. After repair, Avira reported that essential services are disabled. Users of the free product are entitled to tech support by email, so I put in a query. Tech support recommended using the Avira AntiVir Rescue System, a bootable antivirus environment. After the Rescue scan, the keyboard became completely unresponsive.

My Avira contacts offered to remote into the system to attempt a fix, but since the ordinary user wouldn't get that level of support I declined. They only remaining recourse would have been to boot from the Windows CD and choose Repair, or totally reinstall Windows. Like many users, I don't have a Windows CD that matches the installed version. This system wound up with no keyboard and no hope.

On another system, Avira installed but absolutely would not run. I scanned using the Rescue environment, but it didn't help with the problem. Once again tech support recommended using the Windows CD to repair the system or completely reinstalling Windows.

?Avira installed and scanned yet another test system, but never managed to remove all the malware. Its realtime detection system reported threats and offered to remove them. The antivirus performs a mini-scan after a realtime detection. This scan revealed that most of Avira's own executable files were infected. The cleanup process terminated Windows Explorer, leaving no visible desktop. After a reboot, the whole thing happened again, and again.

I encountered similar problems in testing AVG Anti-Virus FREE 2013, but tech support managed to solve them all. AVG users can get free remote-control tech support if necessary to solve installation or cleanup problems. They do have to go through several other levels before escalation to top-level support.

A good way to be more fit is to go to bodybuilding websites and bookmark them for later use. If you aren?t feeling up to the task of losing weight, head over to a site you bookmarked to get motivated again. Use this information to acquire the inspiration you need to continue with your goals.

TIP! Dispose of the unhealthy food in your refrigerator and pantry. If you go out a lot to fast food places or candy stores it?s going to just tempt you every time you?re there.

There are so many diets and exercise routines out there these days, that it can be overwhelming. These advertisements rarely mention anything about visiting your doctor. The people behind weight loss diets and fitness routines are often focused on how much money they can make, rather than your medical health.

Get rid of your ?fat? clothing. By keeping larger-sized clothing, you are sub-consciously giving yourself permission to gain back the weight that you have shed. By getting rid of these clothes, you end up forcing yourself to continue with your weight-loss routine.

TIP! Do not drink soda. They have lots of sugar and carbs, and increase future sugar cravings.

Working out is an important aspect of losing weight. It is helpful to set aside time every day so that you are committed to exercising. Write the time on a calendar and don?t make plans that interfere with it.

Use a smaller plate at lunch or dinner if you are trying to lose weight. People tend to fill their whole plate when eating. By reducing the plate, you can reduce your portion sizes. Using a smaller plate can help you to eat less without you even realizing it.

TIP! Keep lower your meal portions for good health. Studies show that smaller meals help someone lose and maintain weight loss.

Skim milk is a lower calorie option than juice. The milk will help fill you up while giving you nutrients that your body needs. By doing this, you will have a more fuller feeling and you will eat less. This minimal change to your eating habits can make it much easier for you to attain your goals.

You should always have time in the morning to eat breakfast. When you?re in a hurry, you could easily be tempted to get a breakfast pastry as you go to work. But, these pastries are loaded with empty calories. By eating some fruit and oatmeal in the early morning when you?re at home, there will be no excuse to get a breakfast pastry high in calories.

TIP! It is common knowledge that increasing your water intake will help you shed the pounds. However, if that water is cold, it can even boost your metabolism! Drinking very cold water forces your body to do work to bring the temperature up, which raises your metabolism.

An excellent tip for weight loss is regularly having sex. Sex lowers the cravings that you have when it comes to bad food types. Sex is an exercise that most people don?t find boring compared to traditional exercise. It can be a fun way to work out throughout the week. This activity burns many calories.

One way to help your weight loss efforts along is to choose chunky soups. Drinking calories is not a good idea. If you eat chunky soups that are full of healthy vegetables and beans, you will feel fuller longer.

TIP! Try drinking eight glasses of water each day in order to lose weight. When you are drinking plenty of water, you aren?t tempted by calorie-filled sodas and juices.

Aim to lose about one pound each week. If you lose more than that, it may not be good for you. If you lose weight to quickly, it can be quite dangerous to your health. Additionally, quick weight loss usually means quick regain.

One easy way to help lose weight is by combining physical exercise with meals. Are you planning on packing a sack lunch? Walk to a nearby park for your meal. If you have time to plan meals and physical activity, you will be successful in losing weight.

TIP! If you work full-time, be certain to bring snacks that are healthy to work with you. This is really important if you?re working long hours, because you don?t want to crash upon reaching the house.

Foods that are low calorie versions are usually easy to get. Consider cutting the amount of cheese on pizza when out, or try low-fat ice cream as an alternative to traditional. If you drink soda or beer, switch to diet or light.

When you plan ahead will make it easier to add in the nutritional part of losing weight. Consider writing down what you will eat at each meal, and pack a cooler to take healthy food along when you?re away from home.

Fifteen Minutes
To stay healthy, spread your eating habits out through the day. It?s better to eat more, smaller meals instead of 3 large ones. This helps keep your metabolism working throughout the day.

TIP! For those having trouble losing weight on their own, a nutritionist may be just the ticket. A teacher will help an individual to make choices that are healthier about the food he or she eats on a daily basis.

When you start feeling hungry, drink a glass of water and wait fifteen minutes before eating. Often times boredom or thirst can be mistaken for hunger. Take fifteen minutes and go for a walk, or drink some water. If you are hungry after this, then you can eat food.

It is OK to not finish your plate of food while you are losing weight. Most parents make children eat everything when they are eating, and this can cause weight issues throughout their adult years. Put those leftovers in a box and take them home. Do not force down food if you are not hungry. Focus on the food you are eating and quit when you begin to feel satisfied.

TIP! Stay away from diet pills that claim to give dramatic results. There is limited evidence that they will be beneficial in any way, but could actually cause you to become addicted to them.

Fad diets can suck you in and make you believe that they offer you the best way to lose weight. However, if you want to lose weight successfully and keep it off, you should avoid fad diets. Modern fad diets can hurt you because you are cutting out all of one thing. These diets include the cottage cheese diet or cabbage diet. This will never help you find another way to consume foods. You will make better choices if you have better education.

If you want to lose weight, you will have to focus on your progress rather than your mistakes. Set goals for yourself, such as avoiding snacking throughout your day. State your goals clearly and in a positive way. Repeated statements of intention over time become mantras, which then become beliefs that you manifest as real truth.

TIP! Phasing red meat out of your diet can be an excellent way to lose pounds. Red meat is loaded with fats and unhealthy cholesterol.

Losing weight involves many psychological aspects. Once you can control your mind, you will be victorious. You have to know that you?re doing everything you possibly can to achieve your goal. When you have the confidence in what you?re doing, it becomes easier to be successful.

Try cardio to help you lose weight. Lifting weights for strength training will add to your fitness, but never forget that heart rate-boosting cardio is the center piece of a weight loss exercise program. For weight loss, you need to get moving rather than get stronger.

Lose Weight
Substitute fruit for the sweets you typically eat. If you have been snacking on candy bars, chocolates and other unhealthy items, replacing them with fruit provides you with a healthier form of sugar and the benefits of the fruits? fiber, vitamins and minerals.

TIP! If you enjoy potato chips, make the switch to healthier baked versions to cut calories and fat. This is 30% less in fat and calories and you might not see any difference.

Taking the time to pay your doctor a visit can greatly benefit your efforts to lose weight. Visiting a doctor allows your weight loss plan to be more customized to fit you specifically. Your doctor takes your health into consideration, helps you create more obtainable goals and gives you more information. Doing this could help you lose weight faster because you will not be wasting time on plans that do not work.

It is best to avoid the latest diet crazes when you are trying to improve your nutrition. Any eating plan that advise you to cut out entire food groups from your diet is unhealthy and should be avoided. In the weight loss industry, fad diets fall in and out of fashion in rapid succession. These do not last because they bring weight loss results that are short-term and fail to provide long-term results.

Doing your own PR as a start-up, and how to write a press release ...

A few weeks back I spoke at one of Stylist Magazine?s Stylist Network events, which focused on building a world-famous business. While these have formerly focused on vertical sectors, the team told me that at each event they?ve held, how to promote a business, pitch to journalists and write a press release were issues that come up time and time again.

Joining me on the panel was beauty pioneer Jo Malone, who after selling her namesake brand to Estee Lauder in 1999 and remaining at the helm till 2006 founded Jo Loves (joloves.com) last year. She gave an utterly inspirational talk about the four key things she thought were vital to every entrepreneur (summed up wonderfully by Maggie here). Also on the panel was Eimear Lambe, Twitter?s small-business expert, who provided an intro to using the social platform as a startup, and Olivia?Phillips, senior fashion assistant for Stylist, who gave the crowd the lowdown on pitching the mag.

I did a short session on the five things every startup could do for themselves in terms of PR, but couldn?t resist cheating a little and packing in more than that. Giving advice on practical things businesses can do to promote themselves is one thing, but without a plan and a goal, you might be putting your energy into the wrong things.

The two slides I showed the crowd are below; the first contains the six questions most agencies will want to answer before building a PR strategy, so as a business-owner you could do this yourself, the second is a snapshot of some basic tactics that can then be applied to start building buzz. Typically I?d rave about Twitter, but Eimear pretty much had that locked down :)

After the Q&A (which was full of questions, lovely to see) we broke off into separate groups. I took three sessions on writing a press release, with my advice covering the following:

  • A press release is really just a way to send out information, but you can turn this into anything you like. While the most typical format for this for a PR agency is to write a release, a business owner might just want to send out a few emails to key contacts, or tweet a few journalists to meet for a coffee. Don?t be constrained to a traditional press release structure, and do what?s appropriate for your business. There?s no ?doing it wrong? in this respect.
  • Ask yourself if you really need to write the release before you do so. Is what you?re saying really new/interesting/newsworthy? Why will people care? Key influencers get sent hundreds of emails a day with releases or pieces of news in, so yours will have to stand out.
  • What will the headline be of the?news story?a blogger or journalist will write after they receive your release? Take that and make it the headline of your release.
  • Don?t send your release as an attachment, instead copy & paste in plain text into your email using the pitch template at the bottom of this page. It?s a controversial one, since some people don?t actually mind attachments ? but on the whole, most journalists and bloggers tend to dislike them as the excess file size clogs up their inboxes.
  • The same goes for pictures. This splits opinion, but to be safe, it?s better not to send any in your first pitch but have high resolution, good quality images available to send immediately when requested.
  • When pitching, don?t waste your email subject with pointless additions like ?breaking news? (it?s not ?breaking? if you?ve had time to write a press release about it)
  • Don?t use vague terms like ?leading? or ?highly scalable? ? they add nothing to your release and anyone using it to write a story will only strip them out anyway, so don?t waste your time
  • Try not to make tenuous links to current affairs. While I?m all for being seasonal and topical, unless there?s a natural link between your product and a high profile news event, any release that ties the two together is just an awkward read
  • Last but not least, don?t send a release and then be out of reach/go on holiday. It?s a wasted opportunity if someone does get back to you.

While talking this through, I also drew a diagram of the layout of a typical email pitch, which I also thought might be useful to mock up again and share (see below!)

All in all, I had a great time on the night and those I spoke to felt the same. You can find out more business-focused advice and the latest on Stylist Magazine?s events here.

A Simple Survey Could Determine Your Risk for Ovarian Cancer ...

As women, we have to go through countless medical tests throughout our lives. Mammograms, pregnancy tests, HIV tests, and bone-mineral density tests are all par for the course when you become an adult. In fact, few women haven?t gotten all of these tests and more. Don?t get me wrong- as a physician, I genuinely appreciate our ability to screen for life-threatening conditions, and I wouldn?t have it any other way. However, as a woman, I understand the patient side of it as well. ?Wouldn?t it be easier if medical screening tests were simpler? According to a new study, simplicity might just be attainable.

Researchers have developed a new screening tool for ovarian cancer that can be completed in minutes by a simple survey. That?s right, no heavy machinery, foul-tasting chemicals, or drafty hospital gowns required, just a simple pen and paper. ?The study questionnaire that was tested was based on a symptom-screening index developed in 2006 by M. Robyn Andersen, Ph.D and co-author Barbara Goff, M.D., professor and director of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. ??The survey asks women three questions about their current symptoms that have been most commonly associated with women that screened positive for ovarian cancer. A few of the symptoms might be passed off as menopause or menstruation symptoms, so the key in early diagnoses is recognizing the symptoms as they are happening. Some of these symptoms include abdominal or pelvic pain, a sensation of feeling full too quickly, and abdominal bloating. You have to admit, you?d never attribute any of these symptoms to cancer.

Traditionally, ovarian cancer is thought to have no early warning signs, such as bleeding or an abnormal Pap smear, as one sees in uterine cancer or cervical cancer, respectively.? In comparison to breast cancer, which is the most frequent cancer in women, with about 212,000 new cases a year, ovarian cancer has only 25,000 new cases a year. But, because there are no early warning signs or tests to detect ovarian cancer, and the cancer has progressed to a more advanced stage prior to diagnosis, the death rate is higher?about 62 percent in ovarian cancer, as opposed to 18 percent in breast cancer and 32 percent in cervical cancer.? With that said, this new study takes into consideration symptoms, which are commonly dismissed by many patients and by combining them together, have proven to be significant factor in trying to diagnose ovarian cancer at an earlier stage.

Of course, these symptoms are minor and can easily be associated with other issues. However, the results are proving the survey effective so far. Of 60 women who submitted the survey with positive indication, one was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Of the 1,140 women who did not claim to have the symptoms, none tested positive for ovarian cancer over the course of the following year.

?

The survey will also serve as a research tool for doctors. Women who take the short survey and indicate that they have all of the symptoms will also be asked to write any additional symptoms. If those women screen positive for ovarian cancer, those additional symptoms will be analyzed, and common additional symptoms might be added to the survey to further screen patients.

Early detection is extremely important in treating ovarian cancer. ?If you have these symptoms, talk to your physician about ovarian cancer to rule out the possibility that you might have it. If he or she thinks you should get tested, do so, as it could save your life.

?- Yvonne S. Thornton, M. D., M. P. H.

Panetta urges Latin America not to use military as police

PUNTA DEL ESTE, Uruguay (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta cautioned Western Hemisphere countries on Monday against relying on the military to perform police duties, telling a meeting of the region's defense ministers that civilian authorities should be strengthened to deal with law enforcement on their own.

Addressing an issue faced by many Latin American countries as they grapple with insurgencies or drug trafficking, Panetta told the officials, "The use of the military to perform civil law enforcement cannot be a long-term solution."

He acknowledged it is sometimes difficult to tell whether transnational threats to peace and stability should be handled by the military or law enforcement, a debate that has divided the United States as it responded to the September 11 attacks over the past decade.

"As partners, the United States will do what we can to bridge the capability gaps between armed forces and law enforcement," he said at the 10th Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas.

"We are committed to do so in a manner respectful of human rights, the rule of law and civilian authority," he said. "We can and we will provide a helping hand, but ultimately civilian authorities must be able to shoulder this burden on their own."

Panetta spoke on the last day of a three-day visit to South America, where in meeting with fellow defense ministers he pressed for greater collaboration among militaries as part of the Pentagon's new defense strategy.

The strategy, which was approved earlier this year, calls for greater U.S. focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

The Pentagon's Western Hemisphere Defense Policy Statement released last week emphasized threats like terrorism and drug trafficking, and called for the Pentagon to help partner countries - those with whom the United States does not have a formal treaty of alliance - develop and professionalize their military forces.

The strategy seeks to renew U.S. military ties with Latin America after a decade in which Washington was focused on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and countries in the region complained of neglect.

But with a long, complicated history of interventions and meddling in Latin America, the United States will have to overcome deep suspicions as it works to build broader military ties in a region where stable democracies have taken root in recent decades

In visits to Peru and Uruguay, Panetta took steps to implement the U.S. strategy. He agreed to begin work with each country to update their 60-year-old defense cooperation accords to move them beyond Cold War themes and accommodate changes in the laws. Officials said that would enable broader cooperation.

CHILEAN STRATEGY

In opening remarks to the plenary session of the conference, Panetta praised what he said was a "remarkable transformation in defense collaboration" in the hemisphere over the past decade, with more and more countries contributing to collective defense efforts like peacekeeping and humanitarian relief.

"We have an historic opportunity to create a new era in our relationship - an era of broad and constructive hemispheric defense collaboration," he said.

Panetta said the United States would like to see the region's militaries improve coordination of their response to natural disasters and humanitarian crises. He said Washington also would work to promote stronger government institutions in the region as a means of promoting security.

U.S. officials have pointed to the devastating magnitude 7 earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010 as an example where more effective coordination of the military response could have saved lives.

"Western Hemisphere nations worked together to provide much-needed help, but we lacked a mechanism to collaborate in real-time and focus our efforts where they were needed most," Panetta said.

He urged the defense ministers to agree to a Chilean initiative which would establish a Web-based system for militaries to coordinate assets they have available to respond to a disaster.

"That's what the Chilean initiative is all about - rapid and fully integrated response. We should implement that initiative now so that we're ready to respond quickly and effectively when the next disaster strikes," Panetta said.
